what is more usefull

Dangit Darren! Now you've gone and reminded me how much I want one of Ron's presses! I need to start knocking over liquor stores or something....this day job isn't cutting it ;)

LOL, don't do that, we want to keep you around here for a while, not in some cell with a guy that looks like Indian George who wants to call you sweetie! :D

cden & JCaswell,

I'm talking about a harbor freight 20ton air/hydraulic bottle jack on sale for 69.99. I already have a 20 ton pneumatic press and was thinking if I ever get around to trying damascus again I could just switch out the bottle jacks and hook it up to an air compressor- sounds like what you first built, JCaswell. I'd love to have one of Ron's presses but no money like that right now...

Yes, that would be like my first one. It was fine for welding, but way, way too slow for drawing (about 20 seconds per inch). I keep it around for insertion and other similar duties.
If you build a hydraulic press for bladesmithing, you really should set up a 'real' hydraulic system--something that can move about 1 inch per second is fast enough for me.
