What is one characteristic or spec from a manufacturer that disqualifies them for you

Hinderer did increase the detent stiffness on recent models due to people's complaints.
Whether it is enough for some people or not is a matter of personal preference, but it is stiffer now.

The emerson wave thing, I hate the way it looks and I don't get it, is it supposed to hook onto your pants or some?

If this is an actual question, simply go on YouTube and check out Emerson Wave Opening.
You will get hundreds of videos showing it in action.

The hook catches on your pocket as you pull the knife from the pocket, so the blade is open as soon as it leaves the pocket.
That was a terribly constructed sentence, but that's what the Wave does. ;)

Emerson wave

In fact it works so well it is almost like a magic trick.
No . . . it IS so good it is MAGIC !
Brilliant bit of knife design that is. Now if they could thin out the blade on one or two for us milk toast city slickers . .

I found it gimmicky at best.

Can you open your knife by pulling it in a specific fashion from your jeans? Sure. Can it make for quick "deployment"? Sure.

But I carried it in a bag mostly. If it's on me, it's generally in a shorts pocket, sweatshirt pocket or jacket pocket.

Useless to me for anything but opening bottles of micro-brew.

Sorry to insult the wave slaves among us, but I gotta agree... a wave disqualifies the knife for me.

But it opens your beer!
Think of it as a bottle opener instead of a blade opener, and you'll quickly see the added utility of it. :)

Any knifemaker who uses the term "deploy" to describe opening a folding knife. ;)

1: Sharp handles, i have learnt painfully over the years to put that consideration first instead of last, finish your fncking handles properly, you lazy pieces of shHAPPY THOUGHTS

2/3: Low, thick edge grinds, quite a few knives like that has been giving me grief lately, BM 51 first and foremost, ka-bars, Hogue EX folders, BM Griptilian to a lesser degree, since i can not really tell if it is the steel or the edge shape that is givn me problems much of the time, this is both two and three

4: Boring black g-10 and the like, especially if it sucks up sweat like a sponge *looks with disgust in direction of hogue ex-4*

5: Stupid thumb spikes/ramps

6: Moronic pocket clip mounting mountains *looks again at hogue ex-4 and remembers those begg knives*

7: Bad action, flipping, opening, unsheathing, this new magnum tanto IX i got has a really odd sheath snap, i barely understand how to use it...

Emerson Wave is something I cannot cope with. Spyderco isn't disqualified for me yet, but I'm having troubles understanding the giant hole in the blade and why people put zip ties and nuts on them.

The "giant hole" is the thing that allows you to open it one-handed with your thumb.

People put ugly zip ties and nuts on them to make it function as the Emerson wave you dislike does...except without the added benefit of being able to open your beer. :(

For me, I actually love some of the design of the zero tolerance folders, but I just hate the way the finish looks on their blades. That kind of scratchy, stonewashed and pitted look just doesn't seem as nice to me and I always shy away from them because of it. Wondering what keeps you away from other makers. Maybe it's rumors about their heat treatment or their default blade steel or maybe it's just their design aesthetic.

lol, that is my favorite blade finish. Black washed blades drive me wild.

For me, I don't like the axis lock (bad experiences with omega springs) or the prices. So Benchmade is out for me.

I just don't buy the knives I don't want to buy.
There is no one feature that makes me not want them; it is a combination of things that makes me want some knives rather than others.

Except for Mantis knives.
They just all-round suck. :D

Hhhmmmm, still not sure if I can get over how weird they look. Much of their catalogue looks too samey. I've been collecting knives for 12 days, I'm sure a lot of my tastes will change with time.

Colorado based, right? They may need to have their pot intake restricted.

To be fair, that is a trainer knife. It has no blade grind so they cut extra holes in the blade to achieve the exact weight and balance of the actual knife.
But yes, it is still a strange design:D

But what makes it $300, the fact that they didn't have to sharpen it or the paper clip they attached for the pocket?

PuddleMonkey,

You could do yourself a HUGE favor and post less and learn more.
Spyderco is TOTALLY FREEKIN EXCELLENT as a company, as a knife designer, and . . . the owner is a great individual, they are ground breaking and have set the standard for many things . . .

Colorado native and NONpot smoker here.

(of course these guys would say the same thing about me)
