What is the appeal of OTF knives?

blade play

What??? how come my 2001 MT Halos don't have any of this did I get ripped off. :D In all seriousness they are toys like most of the knives we all buy. I believe most common people can get away with a SAK or a locking buck of some kind unless your profession calls for some kind of a duty blade. Although I love the plunge lock design very strong shame its not more common in manual knives as it is in autos. Theres a video on youtube of a guy beating the hell out of his halo v and it still fires hard. You can use these knives like you can drive a aston martin to work but most don't cause of the impractical the cost.

I bought a 50 dollar "lightening" tawainese made otf knife. I knew that I did NOT want to spend 4 bills on a microtech. I bought it for the cool factor, and it is just fine to fart around with. its mostly a novelty and it got me over the idea that i needed an expensive one. warning- don't give it to retard friends to play with. there's always some knob who wants to see if they can dick with it just right to find out "why it works". luckily, mine still works fine after giving it to the abovementioned retard friend. who happens to be an engineer. what a surprise.

An Aston Martin is one of the fastest cars in the world and you can measure its performance in hp compared to other cars. A $400 MT Halo isnt the best at anything other than maybe being one of the coolest/fun mechanisms around.

I don't know where people get the idea that OTFs are gimmicky, a novelty, or only for show. I can only assume that these same people have never actually used one. I've put a Microtech Scarab through its paces at work and it worked and continues to work just fine. You aren't going to be using one for super heavy duty work, but it will handle medium duty work just fine.

Exactly. There's definitely some "novelty" to the mechanism and operation, but that's like saying that there's some "novelty" to the automatically deploying spoiler on a Porsche 911. I carried and used a Scarab for several years, and there's nothing I'd expect any folding knife of similar size to do that the Scarab couldn't also do.

True but do your really need to be at work that fast? My point was what us regular joes realistically need to get through the day. My vic classic will satisfy most of my needs as a knife. all the other blades are just gravy. A Toyota Corolla will get you to work just the same as the Aston Martin but you just won't be as badass.

Get one and find out. :)
My Ultratech is thin, light weight and a hand never has to touch the blade. For me, an OTF is the perfect EDC.

How about the fact that you can get a full grip on the knife and fire it while never having to change your grip at all.

Not really.

There are all kinds of cars out there that will walk all over an Aston, but none of them are as cool.

Hell, a $50,000 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500 will run with (or outrun) a new Aston...but which would you rather own? (not counting the astronomical taxes, licensing, maintenance, and insurance)

This thing (http://www.chevrolet.com/corvette-zr1/) will follow an Aston Martin home and mount it in the garage when you are asleep...but it isnt NEARLY as sweet as an Aston, either.

The HALOs are single action, which helps. On a double action, like my Makora II, lockup can't be as tight since the deployment mechanism is more complex and less forgiving on tighter tolerances.

Which is one of the reasons I never took the D/A plunge. Plus the infamous microtech CS that I don't want to get into in this thread. I never had a problem with my halos and don't see any in the future *knock on wood*. Not that I'm a big bladeplay whore I just love hearing that thwack or to some of our nerdy set snickt!

They'll hear you coming a mile away with all the rattling noise from the blade play.

That must be one of those Piranhas because I've never had an MT OTF that rattles. Also, the blade play on most are minimal are worst. I'm not making surgical incisions, I'm skinning some wire or cutting up some cardboard. These claims of significant bladeplay are overplayed in my opinion. What is being cut where this slight bladeplay is going to screw everything up?

i guess i just think that they're unsightly. they all seem like match boxes, even the really cool looking ones don't have the sleek style or sightliness of the folders.

that being said, i probably need to play with one; i never have. also, i'd never considered how you don't have have to touch the blade. that is a plus.

They have zero appeal to me. Even if they were legal in my area I just don't feel the need to own one.

And as far as coolness factor... :thumbdn:
