What is the best EDC for under $40 bucks, rat 1 vs spyderco tenacious?

I've been looking around all day for the best knife under 40, i like the price point of the rat 1, but a lot of people lean towards the spyderco tenacious as being a better knife, but I am stuck inbetween them, what is a better every day carry knife and is there any other options that I should look at?

I think it is really going to come down to personal preference. The rat 1 will be lighter weight, but I still personally prefer the Spyderco Tenacious. It was my first spyderco and I really enjoyed the feel. It is just a great value knife, that being said you can not go wrong with either and many people like both knives equally.

+2 on what AddictedToGear said, you can't go wrong with either, they're both great knives. One other thing,I've found in some pants I wear, the Tenacious, being a bit wider by design,is less comfy than a smaller profiled knife (like the Rat 1). It's rare, but there is that one pair of Wrangler jeans...no worries tho,at the price you could get both (even if 1 this payday and 1 the next :D ). Pluses and minuses for both, but both have many more pluses than minuses, both really are great knives for the small investment :)

Yeah I think I am going to go with a OD Green Rat 1 since it has a better price point and its about 10 bucks or so cheaper, I found one shipped for 34

Actually I am going to think about it for a few more minutes, each time I go to buy one I change my mind again, i mean if the tenacious was 30 bucks I would probably get that but I can't find one that cheap

Can't speak for the rat, but I've been carrying a full serrated tenacious for about a month at work with heavy daily use. My .02$ is its a damn good blade, I've used it to cut drywall, wires, zip ties, plastic wrap, cardboard and lots of other random things. I have been wanting a rat for a while tho cause the reviews I see are pretty good. Go with what floats your boat.

I'd pick the RAT-1 over the Tenacious. Just fits me better. If you up your limit by $10, you can get a Delica or Endura, which I'd take over the RAT-1. If the $40 is a hard limit, then the Zing that Scurvy mentioned above is a nice knife. The Skyline can be had for around that same price as well. Personally, I like the Skyline a bit more than the Zing, but both are excellent knives. You should also check out Kershawguy's blem selection. The Blur, Leek, and Shallot are all great choices around your price point as well.

And you think this is better than both of the knives listed above?

I don't think there is a better knife under $40. I have given 3 of them away to 'non-knife people' and they love them.

The Skyline is another great low cost USA made knife but the Zing is a much better flipper IMHO.

This is a good thread. I have neither of those knives and am now quite interested in both. Something about that Spyderhole just does it for me...

I am kind of leaning towards the rat 1 again, the od green/black combo is growing on me, but anyway i am going to think about it for a little while and order something tomorrow, and see what everyone else in here comes up with.

If you like Green on Black, try to find one of these rare beauties:

You also think it is better than the kershaw zing Tanto for $35? I like the fact that it is made in the USA

Yes, much better, I do not like the clip on the zing (I also don't much care for tanto's but the clip is my big issue with the zing). The rat-1 takes a benchmade deep-carry clip, a very standard bolt pattern, even if I didnt prefer deep-carry I just think the zing's clip is ugly.
Personally I like smaller knives so if I were in your position, and didnt already own both, I would buy the Rat-2 but I do still enjoy my rat-1, its one of my work knives (it gets carried along with a mora when I'm working on cars or doing dry wall or yard work or anything else Im worried about loosing a more expensive knife). Both the rat-1 and the tenacious are rather large knives, are you sure you need that/are expecting that size? The Rat-2 is really a great knife and no less capable than its big brother.

I've handled both and they are both excellent. There's not a huge price difference to give an edge to one or the other. Just go with the one you really like aesthetically since they'll perform about the same.

Yeh, I am expecting a rather larger size, although for smaller size I do like the kershaw cryo, and the rat 2 a little bit, but imo I'd prefer the bigger size more.
