what is the best quality slip joint today?

Out there somewhere is a heart-stopping knife..we are all looking and sometimes we find it, the excitement of the chase!

For me that was the Case/Bose muscrat. This is the best built knife I have by a long shot. I dont have any customs, but I am thinking that only a custom slippie would be better.

The Case/Bose Muskrat is a great knife. The blades are ground beautifully and the fit and finish is exceptional. The custom knives I own are only marginally better.

*Edited* I stand Keerected on the Bose/Case knives.Very nice, however it would induce me to get a custom, and I just can't afford that right now.

Are there 2 types of Case/Bose knives? I've seen production ones for over $250. and some for $60.

There is a substantial difference. The $250 + models are just about custom quality. Extremely solid, well built and flawless fit and finish.
One warning, if you get one it will be really hard to look at other production slipjoints the same way.

I haven't gotten a Schatt (or anything from Queen, including a MM jumbo stockman) yet that didn't have unacceptable blade play.

What's on offer currently from Case/Bose? I'm having trouble locating items(all snapped up?) I too have trouble knowing the diff between the 60 and 250 dollar offerings on line. Mini Trapper be nice.....

Willgoy,

The collaboration knives started in 1999. The patterns so far have been:
a slimline trapper, a bullet pattern, Yukon Jack, muskrat pattern, dog leg jack, a pruning pattern, lock-back whittler, cotton sampler and this years large locking coke-bottle with a swing guard. This years knives are still in the pipeline from what little I know. All of them have come in brown suede zipper pouches.

If you find any of the collaboration knives in the 60 dollar price range, snap it up. :D.
(actually the 60 dollar ones are designs by Tony and are regular production. Nothing wrong with them at all, but they are not on the same level as the annual collaboration knives.)

In my opinion, the only things offered by Queen that approach the Case/Bose knives are the Dan Burke collaborations. There have been 4 patterns (I think).
The fist one, the real cattle knife, was a huge 3 blade, with BG-42 stell and cow bone handles with a cow head carved into one of them.

The best collaboration was the small two-bladed English Jack, which came in either withe or black MOP. Also BG-42.

Every shcrade i had bought when they were still a company (pree 2004) was junk. What is up with the oldtimer- the blades corroded and rusted and i could never sharpen them.
Boker (tree brand) is a quality company. Go to AGRUSSELL.COM
Victorinox is always top notch.

Due to short sightedness on the part of Schrade bosses, the last couple of years left something to be desired. But they used to be an exellent line of knives. For a couple of generations they were the mainstay cutlery of working men in alot of the blue collar industry. The carbon steel they used was very high quality. I have first hand experiance with the Old Timers as well as the old line of Schrade-Waldens, and they need take a back seat to few knives out there. "What is up " with Old Timers is they were an exellent cutting tool for a moderate price, with a reputation that was not gained by accident.

If your blades rusted and corroded and you could not sharpen the knife, perhaps you should self examine your treatment of the knife and sharpening techniques.

 Yup, I occasional carry one of those English Jacks. Great knife that does compare with the Case/Bose.

Here is a comment I saved by Tony Bose on the Case collaboration knives...

The Case collaboration knives are much higher quality and limited numbers than the Tony Bose saddlehorns, they are not the same knife. The collaboration knives are deep cryo heat treated ATS34 and all stainless frames and bolsters with pined on shields after the 2nd year. Most of them have a bushing in the pivot and they are made to be work horses. I know several people that carry and use them. They will perform. All of these are made in the proto shop by 3 men. I have went there and helped them get started on the lockback whittler. All the parts are EDM wire cut from prototypes that I make so what they end up with is very close to what I send them. Try one, you'll like it.

Here is a nice link to Case/Collaboration knives with pictures of what has been made http://www.mchenryknives.com/collection/index.html

Sunburst and Bastid, thanks for the explanation.

Now I've been seething with knife-mania ever since looking at those Case/Bose collaborations:D The slimline Trapper, Pruner (really unusual) and especially that Dog-Leg Jack:eek: have brought on a week of insomnia.

Where to get one??? This is the new reason to live:D

I dunno, almost every Old Timer Ive handled was very well made, unusually consistent for knives in that price range. The older cabon steel Old Timers were very easily sharpened to a razors edge. The stainless models were easy to work also, but they didnt seem to get as sharp as the carbon models.

As far as rust and corrosion, I gotta guess "operator error" as the culprit. Many of the Old Timer knives in my collection are 20-30 years old, including one particular knive Ive owned for 28 years. Some have developed a patina (normal and desirable in old carbon blades) and a few are have specs or stains. But not a single one of them is rusted.

I have a small Schrade Walden NY USA # 766 with black rubber scales. I honestly believe its one of the best made in my bunch. It was rusty when I found it but cleaned up nicely.Despite a few pit stains the steel has a decent color to it.
Thats it, Im breaking it out for my EDC.

:D LOL I agree 100% with you...:D They are some incredible knives and even better to hold in your hand and put them away in your pocket or drawer...There are a few stores on the web that carry them but it's not easy to find them and even harder to find the retired models, I have made it a priority of mine to increase the Bose/Case flock in a major way...Besides we didn't need the money, my son can probably get that scholarship to college :p:rolleyes: he's gonna have to now anyways.

Let me ask the question to anyone else out there reading, "Where do you recommend a good place to pickup Case/Bose Collaborations.?
