What is the best small knife for use in sheeple workplace?

This will probably be perceived as coming out of left field, but I truly think my little CRKT Apache III is cute as can be. Unfortunately, had to buy a combo edge to take advantage of SMKW's great closeout prices. A plain edge would be even more sheeple friendly. The knife is the size of slip joints, but has a clip, and a wicked sharp edge.

I like the Apache II also, but it is longer, and not so simply cute as the III is. The II has about a 3" blade. Just never looked up the stats. Not sure if SMKW has the II PE left or not. Do know they have the III combo for $15.

REKAT Sifu! Just tell people that you like bagels... ;)

I have to join the crowd in recommending the Spdyerco Lum Chinese. It has an unusual enough shape not to look threatening to most people and it is just plain beautiful. As an added bonus it is an amazing cutter. :) The blade length is 3-1/8", if that's close enough to 3" for you.

If you're willing to carry a smaller knife you might consider the Spyderco Mouse. The blade is under 2", but it can do anything you would ask of a full-sized fixed blade hunter. And it looks elegant.

I like the Benchmade 690's looks, but for some reason I never really took to it. It gradually slipped out of my regular rotation. Also, the blade is 3.25", which may be pushing your limit.

And I don't own a small Sebenza, but I love my large one. The small one should be the right size for what you need. I would recommend either a wood inlay or a decorated model for optimal sheeple acceptance. (Mine is anodized with the "trailing moon" design.)

Good luck!

Look, we all know what the reality of this situation is. You could carry a pink slip joint, with yellow flowers painted on it, sporting a one inch blade and SOMEONE will take offense to it! Recently, I was showing a new knife to a female co-worker (I knew she'd like it). While she was admiring it, another co-worker (also female) saw it and asked me why brought a "weapon" to work and jokingly asked who I was planning to kill. The knife in question was a Chive! Good thing I left my Sifu at home!! The bottom line... Pick a blade that suits your needs (taking into account the legal issues, co-workers attitudes, YOUR personal opinions, etc.) and don't worry too much about making the sheeple happy!

Wayne,
I follow the thoughts about SPYDERCO Lum Chinesse Folder. Yes, it causes attention in non-knife-friendly environment but it's shaded rather warmly and positively with "wow, it's sweeeet!" in case of extremely expressive individual :)

SPYDERCO Peter Herbst causes rather neutral reaction as well as modest GERBER Air Ranger or CRKT Wasp, especially smaller version.
Katz Knives are rarely mentioned at Forums but they have some very classy looking 3" folders in their production line.

If even smaller knife is required think about BEMCHMADE 770 Osborne, KERSHAW Chive, CRKT Mirage Titanium (sweeeet!)

Wayne,

I guess it depends on what you want to do to the sheeple and how well you know them.

For general use I would suggest a SAK or Leatherman.

I tend to like my Emerson SOFCK - then again I am an engineer and my staff do as they are told..... :D If I am going to carry a knife I want it to be useful and not just for show. I do not carry non-locking knives on principle as I had an problem with one in my youth and have the scar to prove it (I have also learnt to respect sharp pointy things).

Regards,

Ed

Plenty of valid suggestions have already been posted. I would just add the Benchmade 705 to the list. It's small enough not to scare people, but srong and solid enough to take plenty of abuse.

William Henry stuff w/ nice wood helps to defuse any evil karma emanating from said blade. Good quality also, but not a stout as a Sebbie of course.

Small Wood Sebbie is very nice also. (Umfaan is just too small IMHO)

I always carry some kind of bigger folder clipped to my pocket, but you know how sheeple are. The only knife I can pull out in front of the people here at work that doesnt get funny looks is my Victorinox Mini Swiss Champ. The SERE 2000, full size Calypso or any of my Benchmades have to stay clipped, otherwise sheeple would be fainting all over the place.

I have to agree with the SAK or a mini-multitool (Micra). Only a total idiot would feel threatened by one of these knives (UNLESS the Vampire Gerbil is involved!).
Even my Grand-Mother thinks the Micra is "cute".

Good luck,
Allen.

Menace is in the eye of the beholder...

I've even had people call my navigator 'evil looking'!

Then on other days my M2 AFCK doesn't raise an eyebrow. I think that the low key black blade actually helps this.

My solution now is a Calypso Jr Lightweight in my pocket (sometimes a Terzuola Jr., and a Sebertool M4 on my keys.

The M4's blade locks and is very sharp (haven't sharpened it in 6 mths from new) is positioned properly for a right hander and serves for all the silly little jobs where the 'evil looking' Navigator would just be overkill :D

The Calypso Jr comes out for the proper jobs by which point most people just appreciate that you've got it. Its as good a cutter as you'll get under 3" and the only reason to go for something else is if its not robust enough for you (its tougher than it looks). Also, the low cost makes any possible confiscation less painful than, say, a Lum (although I reckon if I bought one I probably wouldn't be able to resist carrying it).

I, too, have a scar from a SAK blade collapsing on me, nearly severed the extensor tendon in my index finger; 3 mths in a splint and if I'd been a year or two older I would have needed surgery. So Big Brother can stick his 'no lock' rule up his Jacksy

Final Thought: Don't show and tell, use it when its needed and then wait for people to ask before you try to convert them. It works for me...

I vote for a Kukri - that way when someone asks a rude and intrusive question, you can behead them as a warning to the other sheeple!

Seriously, I have a medium CS voyager with a tanto tip, and have only had a couple of people aggressive enough to ask me rude questions. I usually give them a long cold look, and then tell them to mind their own damn business.

If we don't start pushing back, we'll lose all our rights soon.

I don't know if anybody mentioned it before, but what about the William Henry knives. They have some very nice dress up folders that I keep looking at for office use. But for now I have had good results with the small sebenza. I have only had a couple of questions on it and after I get past saying "the handle is solid titanium", even non-knife people give me the "oh, that's pretty cool".
As for the lum Chinese folder, I personally think it looks a lot bigger than my (small) sebenza, but I know it's not. I have been afraid to carry it in the office, because I think it looks big because of the length of the handle and the width of the blade, or at least compared to my sebenza. So it has had pretty much weekend duty for me. But that's just my personal opinion. It is a great knife and I do like it, it just seems a little more likely to be questioned to me in an office setting.

Well, I tried the Boa and the office staff freaked! I tried the MOD Hornet and they ran! I now carry the Chive and they laugh! I get no Respect..

Alberta Ed - you beat me to it, I was going to say that! If questioned about the Trailmaster, simply look confused, and then say, "but this is my small knife." :p

You might consider a small or medium stockman or a peanut style slipjoint. You get two or three blades in one knife this way, and can match the blade to the job (a small pen blade shouldn't look very threatening). I have had a lot of luck with my Gerber LST over the years, if you prefer a lockback. And most sheeple seem to think of SAKs as gadgets instead of weapons.
