What is the best way to open carry a knife?

I'm big into horizontal cross draw. Works very well for my purposes as I can get to it quickly with either hand. Working cattle, roping, heck opening a grain sack sometimes one hand or the other is tied up. Right there on my belt line. And I can get to it with either hand. Things can go south rapidly working with livestock and a good sharp knife is simply a safety item. Plus ya can go into town and not scare everybody.

Wife does too for the same reasons.

What kind of knife , and for what purpose ?
SD or utility ?
I carry fixed blades for utility openly on my left hip or tucked in my belt at an angle behind me on my left side.
All with my shirt or jacket benind the handle as I don't do tucked in shirts.

Careful with that, I used to carry a small fixed blade the same way. Reaching for my wallet in line at a grocery store my shirt came untucked from behind the handle (covering it, and I didn't notice). Turns out a police officer in line behind me DID notice...as I was walking out the door I was arrested for a concealed weapon :(. The charges were dropped, but not without bail/lawyer/court costs.

I use a pocket clip. The knife is carried visibly in the open with easy access yet kept safe by the pocket.

Win win.

My wallet goes in a leg pocket, plus here in my rural town / counties nobody cares anyways including cops.
I follow the law as best I can, but if I was to let my jacket or shirt cover my knife a bit I doubt I'd have any troubles.

Love rural areas, especially small towns. But there are benefits to living in a more populated place. Went to REI today ("grand opening")..... just had to refresh my memory on the stuff they carry. I'd give them a $$$ to $$$$ in the outdoor's world. However, certain things are hard to find if you need or want it.

Looked at the line of Leatherman and Vic SAKs.... I'm beginning to be taken by the small Swiss Champ.

All it takes is the wrong cop in the wrong mood at the wrong time...not worth the chance of losing my job or freedom. My shirts have been fully tucked ever since and I have no plans on changing, small price to pay for peace of mind ;).

I am right handed. During the work week, I tuck my fixed blade on my left side, opposite the appendix. The blade is positioned so that my right hand can get to it in a cross draw. It is open carried; not hidden; and anyone can see it. It is not a huge blade, about 4". Nobody has ever given me any hassles. On weekends, I carry a different fixed blade on my hip, at 4 o'clock, open. I use a 4" fixed blade. I've never been hassled, and I have never tried to hide it. If I go to the courthouse, I remove the blade and leave it in the car. That's it. It helps if the blade is not overly tactical in appearance. Some blades look like assault weapons more than others.
