What is the best way to open carry a knife?

Careful with that, I used to carry a small fixed blade the same way. Reaching for my wallet in line at a grocery store my shirt came untucked from behind the handle (covering it, and I didn't notice). Turns out a police officer in line behind me DID notice...as I was walking out the door I was arrested for a concealed weapon :(. The charges were dropped, but not without bail/lawyer/court costs.

The fact he waited for you to slip up, then bothered you for a small fixed knife, pretty much says it all...

This is like those advocacy groups that briefly went around with assault rifles slung because the local laws allowed it... They didn't do it for long.

The purpose of allowing open carry is based on the assumption that open carry is by itself a deterrent, from the associated social stigma. It uses the pretense to be a practical law enforcement issue, but the true purpose of the law is to use that perceived stigma against the would be carrier.

Whattya carrying? If fixed, I'm with @Horsewright as we see similar challenges, but for my Buck 110s, I carry on the belt over the hip at 4 or 5 O'clock in a horizontal open-end slip sheath. The 110 is a two hand opener, so it won't benefit as much from the left-front belt carry.

Apologies to serious leather workers like Horsewright. This is a cheap Nocona sheath I picked up at the feed shop in a moment of need.:(

And no hassles from cops or shops. It's a pretty common sight here on the Front Range.

Yes, like, zieg, I carry my smallish (for a fixed blade) bird & trout knives in a horizontal belt sheath.

I asked an St. Louis cop this same question. He said the pocket clip on the outside of my pocket was considered "open carry". As soon as that clip went in my pocket that was concealed.

A very astute observation.

Depends on the knife, depends on state law, depends local laws and depends on how well LEO's know the law. Some laws are so ambiguous , your legal one day and not the other. I guess it just depends.

Chip, my friend, time to move to a state that has a brain...

We ( Missouri ) are one of those "no CCW permit needed" states. We can carry all kinds of knives - just not big OTFs.

What does a pocket clip have to do with anything? Most of my pocket knives don't have a pocket clip, hence the term "pocket knife"!
Well all of mine do have clips. Plus they ride in my pocket. Hence the term "pocket knife".

I've got one of Horsewright's custom belt and matching horizontal sheath...great setup and outstanding leather-work. Have NEVER seen any work approaching his...
...just saying..

Now, C.M....what do you do when you sit on the throne...does that knife rotate out of the way, or do you cut your knee open... Awfully glad you aren't short...one hellish knife, sir.

I removed the block spacers from the teklok to enable it to rotate almost 90 degrees.

I have one of CM's sheaths and it works great at hiding a big bladed knife and it's quite comfy and very fast on the draw. The handle is all that shows under a jacket, pretty slick setup.
