what is the buck 110 of the modern knives?

I agree that the leatherman has become what the 110 was.. the next step in knife evolution.... from sharpened stone to bowie to buck to leatherman to "who knows".

The conversion of our environment is the leading factor... We are no longer chasing our food down and killing it to survive. Now we drive to the store to get our food, and if the car breaks down along the way we fix it with our new "tool"... man uses tools to solve problems... When the problems can't be solved with the buck 110 then in comes the leatherman to save the day. Who knows what tomorrows handy tool will be, maybe a computer related fix-it item... with a laser for cutting... no sharpening required.
:p

I think it depends on perspective.

I was picking up some stuff at the sporting goods store the other day and was waiting behind a father who was buying his 10 year old son his first real knife. You got it, a Buck 110.

I could tell that the guy was a plain ole Dad buying his son a knife, not a knife knut. He bought his son the "standard" in knives from his perspective. And the look of pride in his eyes as he handed the box to his son was priceless.

Buck 110.

All the 710s and Militaries and AFCKs are great, but they're just not knives of the people like the 110. Keeping popularity in mind with all the other factors, I'll say it's (still) Buck 110, Endura, and Leatherman (and clones).

Well it sounds like it is still the 110 or the good old endura. I see tons of people with the multitools (gerber, Leatherman) and I love my wave. Ok So now we know what is the choice of the everyday person, now what is the choice of the knife community?

Had an Endura, traded it..had a BM710, traded it. Have a Buck 110, well 7 of them and I just picked up a Buck 560, which is basically a 110 with Ti handle. The first knife I got my son was a Buck 110. With Buck quality and service I'll never give up my love for the 110.

I'm gonna have to go with the Benchmade AFCK, that knife took the world over really quick once it was released. Even know with the redesign its still one of those time proven desings.

I think it is the Benchmade 710 it has to be the 110 of the 21st century the ony thing that keeps it from over taking the Buck is it's price and it's not widely available but it is a state the art knife.

Before I came into this thread, I was thinking "Endura."

However, I wonder how many Gerber EZ-Outs have been sold in department stores, etc?

For Forumites, I would say Endura, even though Delicas outsell them. The Endura is closer in size and potential usefulness to the 110.

For the greater world at large, the Gerber might be a little closer to the norm, and I agree with mnblade about the multitools.

And one other thing: I've never owned a 110, but maybe I'll have to rectify that problem!
