What is the LEAST you'll pay for a knife?

Just got a Rough Rider Congress smooth bone for $4....$8 shipped to the EU. Cheapest I have so far. Very nice nevertheless. No minimum really. If I want it and it's cheap...that's only a plus.

If the knife is quality then I will pay around 30(think Spyderco Tenacious/Persistance), other than that all my knives are over the $100 mark. I have 17 Knives.

I would happily pay as little as nothing or even less for a knife but I think the
least expensive knives I have are SAKs or the Spyderco ladybugs/jesters.

I have a couple of Rigid MAX "tactical" Sharpfingers that were about $20 each, and they're as good as the Schrades in my opinion.

Also spent about $20 on a Taiwanese "Lightning" OTF which is pretty good.

Do not currently own any Byrds but they are good cheap knives too.

I agree with that

I paid 5 bucks for a spydie.... the bug! Well worth it

Well I paid 10 dollars for a CKRT Sawtooth on ebay, haven't ever used it but it's there for a spare survival kit. My EDC Kabar Warthog folder that works just as good if not better than all your 150 dollar folders costed me 14 dollars shipped. I don't buy a knife based on how expensive it is, I base my knife purchases on how effective they are for the cost.

The BEST cheap knife that I would carry is a wave modded (by me) Byrd Cara Cara in G10.

Cheapest: 4€'s (including shipping ) a Haller's Carambit knife. (and surprisingly I am getting it mail this week with Spyderco Lady Bug 3 H1, Spyderco Tenacious, Leatherman Kick + Micra combo )

Why would anyone have a minimum that they would spend on a knife?
Because you generally get what you pay for?

Now, I don't have a "hard floor" on what I will pay for a knife, but when the price gets below around $40-45 I certainly start to get cautious. I'd rather pay $80 for a good knife that will probably outlast me, than $30 for a cheap POS that I would probably end up throwing out after a couple uses.

IMO just becuase a knife is inexpensive does not neccessarily make it a bargain. ;)

I have several Byrd knives made for Spyderco (in China).

I think all of them were less then $25 shipped to me. All of them have exceeded my expectations.

I even recommend them to my non-knife friends (most of them think they are expensive).

Inexpensive doesn't necessarily make it a bargain but it doesn't exclude an inexpensive knife from being a bargain either either.

I normally carry customs but I also own a Ka-bar Dozier that I picked up for fifteen bucks and I consider it to be a bargain.

I really can't afford to blow money on mint customs . . . but once it is carried and used the price can drop up to 50%. Does that count?

I would rather spend 25 dollars on a good knife that I know I will use than 80 on a knife I would be hesitant to. I have had the same Ka-Bar folder and have used it for duty carry for two years-it has held up to the salty air and water of the Florida coast, the loose dust of midwest Texas, the cold dirty snow of Wisconsin and now Idaho. It holds its edge as good as any 80 dollar knife I own. Best part is, I can go through 3 of them before I reach the cost of an 80 dollar knife. And I have ABUSED my knife. Get as cautious as you want but most of you guys that insist on spending 50 dollars minimum on a knife rarely ever use them outside of opening letters anyway.

Lets you take any folding knife in existence going for $25 or less, I will take a ZT 300.

And let's do some tests mkay?

First test, resistance to rubber, we will run each knife over with the same car.
Knives must be in the open position. I will pick up the ZT and will have a knife,
you will pick up a pile of parts.

I'll take that bet, with my old Buck 450. Thing's been run over by bigger stuff than you'd go with your ZT.

Why are we running it over, again? Is that supposed to prove something?

You're on, and it will be a Ford Expedition going 25 mph.

Next test: lever, I will pry a 900 lb truck engine and so will you.
I will have a knife, you will have a much shorter knife.

We are trying to prove cheap knives do not survive.

keep smilin'

Give me a week and I'll build one for a buck that'll survive your "tests". I'm still waiting for your point- all you're saying is that you can overbuild a knife, and it'll survive more than a cheaper one. Care to go round for round- say, a CS GI Tanto against the ZT? Fairer game.

I don't think I have a cutoff point really.

But I'd say i'm suspicious of knives in the 5-15 dollar range. Probably wouldn't buy those without handling them first.

But below that, ehh, what the hell. A little while ago I payed $1.60 each for 3 little tanto fixed blades to abuse as throwers. Are they crap? yes, but at that price point I don't care.
