What is the right way to pronounce patina?

I believe Case is pronounced like suitcase or briefcase.

Maybe it gives them a feeling of power....or maybe it's like, "Well, yer gonna stain sometime dangit so bygod I'm gonna do it myself". :D

Yeah! Get it over with. I get a new truck, I can't wait for the first little (hopefully) ding, so I can quit worrying about it's virginity!

I've had to force them due to my work environment. About 3 months during the summer its so humid and I work out in it. Completely wet by 8am. It will have surface rust on it before lunch were the sweat droplets are hanging out on the blades. The patina helps with that issue for me. A forced patina doesn't protect as good, it hasn't worked its way into the steel as well. But it helps to get it started. I also eat lots of fruit to get it underway.

Great Thread!!

From a truly suthen per-spective, I pronounced them;

Puh TEA na (NEVER heard it pronounced any different)
ka MEAL us (until I learned better)

Had never heard the Tiodioute pronounced so I called it TE oh dow (but not after reading WayNorths explanation :D )

for them foreign ones I said OH pin ell and the few times I did say it I said La Yule

Now - as someone asked, how about Ver de greee?

Hmmm, I'll call it Pa Tina and that would be the oxide layer that turns brass from shiney yellow to brown. Vair degree for the next term : the green oxide that eventually forms on pure copper, bronze, brass or any copper alloy. Copper eavestrough or roof sheathing will oxidise to that rather unappealing green color over time. Once the green layer has formed the metal underneath will be protected from any further oxidisation for a long, long time. Process is faster when the metal is exposed to smog and pidgeon sh%$.

When I make my own Mokume for bolsters it looks rather ho-hum, shined and buffed. I wipe it down with cold gun blue and it gets a darker sweeter color. Even better if you use Acetic acid and gun blue and fume the mokume for a few days. Not recommended for clearing sinus cavities.

I have heard it pronounced two different ways. One is patt-ih-nah and the other puh-tina (like a girls name). How do you pronounce it. I prefer the first way myself. Any other ways you have heard it pronounced?

"Passivated oxide layer"

You learn something new everyday. I always said "lag-ee-ole". (Laguiole)

So, I'm almost afraid to ask - how do you pronounce "Opinel"? I have always said "oh-pin-ell".

thx - cpr

ps - I asked my dad again, and he doesn't remember ever telling me about "patina". That figures. He does remember me pronouncing the Sioux indians the "Sigh-oucks" indians. (I'll never live that one down.)

You should know better. Don’t you remember Johnny Cash singing his moving hymn about discrimination against native Americans? It was about a boy who was beat up all his life because his Injun loving father did his worst, resulting in A Boy Named Sioux.

Here is the correct pronunciation of the Native American Tribes Main name Sioux, and a little history. I don't think the late Mr. Cash had this word in mind when he wrote the song "A Boy Named Sue" in 1969......

I assume you're joking :p

We listen to A Boy Named Sue occasionally; it's one our favorites.

That's a dangerous assumption.
