What is the smartest thing you have ever done with a Knife?

Not sure its the smartest but has to rank up with the best things I've ever done with a knife ... was to join these forums share and pick up a lil knowledge and friendship ... and gift a knife or two to some good people I've met along the way.

I guess just having one on me. Seems like every get together that I go to, someone needs a knife.

Smartest thing I've ever done is refuse to let a co-worker borrow it.

Possibly also the time I used one to draw an analogy between knives, weapons, and a carabiner made out of 3/8" stainless steel.

Long story.

Comes to mind the smartest (or cleverest) thing was to save it from confiscation at the airport by hiding it. I always go through my carry on one last time as I approach security. This time I found what was then my favorite EDC. I slipped it out, walked to where the window sill was well over six feet up. I'm over six feet, so if I could reach it but not see it, it was as safe as it could be. As long as no one saw me or the windows didn't get cleaned before I returned, I'd get my knife back. No one did, they didn't, and I did. It was there on my arrival home.

Not wanting to be repetitive carrying them everyday. One small fixed such as a LT WRIGHT Frontier Valley, 2nd i carry a 3-3.5" folder for EDC such as a Para 2 or Manix 2 and lastly I carry a 4-41/2" as a tactical such as a Manix 2 XL or one of my Military's. I actually very much like the feeling of carrying them.

The smartest thing I have done with a knife:
A few years ago, I gave my wife a Spyderco Dragonfly, with the stainless steel & tattoo, as an anniversary present. :)
She was not a knife person.... now, she always has a knife on her , even if she is not a knife knut.
She often comments about how thankful she was to have a knife on her because either:
  • With the kids, she needed to cut _something_ ... a snack, a straw, a string on someone's clothes, boxes, clothes tags, whatever.
  • Or in some group of moms, they needed to cut something, and she had the only knife in the group.
Of course, now, she has a few more choices and picks the right knife for what she plans on doing on any given day.

Enjoy

I give my daughter knives as gifts. A Spyderco Lady Bug, a Buck 110, and a Benchmade Mini Griptilian so far. I want her to have a fondness/appreciation for knives also.

Two things come to mind, 1. Going back to carrying a slip-joint. I carried one as a kid, stopped carrying a knife at all for a few years, got into modern folders then added a slippy to my carry. Not only the most useful but sheeple friendly,(sort of). And 2. Getting my K’roo “Chunky Drunk” slipjoint prybar/lifter made so I’m never tempted to use my knife as one and end up posting about it in the other thread!

Agreed JJ!
Joining this nut house!!
Given a whole bunch away to turn more people into knife knuts!
My 3 sons ALWAYS have a knife in their pocket......ALWAYS.
I love getting those 'thanks dad' texts from them explaining how the knife bailed them out during the day.
Great feeling!

I've done something similar (twice) at our county courthouse. Metal detectors at the door. Big barrier flower pots outside. Make sure nobody's watching, push the pocketknife down into the dirt. Just don't forget it when you get done in the courthouse.

Smartest ever? I'll have to do some thinking and remembering. Smartest thing recently was to use an oyster knife to separate some stuck together frozen burgers. Worked great.

Started carrying an average of three: one to use, one “sheeple” friendly (smaller or less aggressive looking), and one to lend.

After decades, my carry evolved into that kind of troika arrangement, except for a loaner. I don't lend my knives. If asked, I will do the cut. My three are a multi-tool in LF pocket, locking folder in RF, and Vic Manager tucked into the watch pocket. Sometimes I will add or subtract from this arrangement for special occasions, but most days of the year, this is my loadout.

Given them as gifts to noteworthy friends., along with instruction on their use and maintenence. Always feels good to get someone into the hobby.

That's my biggie. It has worked with several of my friends and relatives, who have themselves become daily knife bearers. I have even had a couple of them eventually thank me for my missionary service. None have actually become hobbyists, but all saw the value of having a blade with them in their day to day.

Nothing exciting comes to my mind just yet. So I’m hoping all you guys have tales to tell about the smartest thing you have done with your knife.

Assuming there are at least a few brain surgeons reading this . . . I haven't done a damb thing all that smart with a knife. :)

As far as exciting (only to me) that would have to be : actually learning to sharpen one FINALLY and to be able to get it sharper than I ever thought possible (by me or anyone else) FINALLY.

Chicken and egg sort of. o_O
Second smartest thing I ever did with a knife is : put it in an Edge Pro Apex ;)
boring but you asked.
