What is this thing used for?

The rubber plays a part, but more the fact that the wheel rolls with the belt.

I was thinking about this too. I have the 14 incher.
I was thinking that the slight bend in the belt exposes the grit more efficiently to the steel. So you might get a better bit and a bit longer wear. Just a theory....

Love it! That guy knows how to grind! Is that a wooden wheel?

This is probably my fav grinding video of all time, big wheel.

True that, not a theory.

Having a belt wedged between a platen & blade is not very efficient and is hell on the belt. But we still do it.

I think the heat from friction on the platen is the biggest belt killer. I made an air cooled radius platen like Nathan used to sell and belts seem to last longer on that than my glass flat platen. I think I'm going to invest some time in making a liquid cooled platen.

Otoh I might not really use a flatt platen if I get a 24" wheel.

That is what I think too .And rubber backing also help ceramic not easy tear/rip out from belt ?

Id love to get me some large contacts and do some hollow grinds. I personally know an upper level folder/flipper maker who told me a few weeks back, when I was asking him about hollow grinding, that its much easier to hollow grind than it is to do full flats He told me he doesn't even do full flats because he doesn't really know how and that he sucks at it so he sticks to hollow since that's what his customers want anyway.
