What is too much for you to carry?

It's really situational, if I need to carry a fixed blade I'll carry as large of one as I need to.

But as for daily going to work, out to dinner with the wife etc, something like the CS 4 Max is usually as big as I'll go..

It’s also very situational for me, but I generally favor small knives.

In the office - Something like a CRK Mnandi is my max.

Pocket carry - Small CRK Sebenza range is my max. Once it gets much over 3 oz, I feel like it bounces too much if I start running. That said, I rarely pocket carry. Keys, front carry wallet, pen, small notebook and phone are pretty much all I want in the pockets.

Belt carry, civilization - I try to stay under a 3” blade, but do carry a 3.5” fixed blade at times. That would be my max.

Belt carry, wilderness - 4” fixed blade. I could carry a bigger knife, but I’ve never felt the need or desire to.

After carrying knives with nicely milled out scales for weight reduction I am starting to fall for the really fit BIGGINS! 🤣🤣🤣

9” overall but only 4.5 ounces!!

This sheath changed my opinion about big folders. Right now: anything much heavier than a Hinderer XM-18 won't go in a pocket...
Nice sheath. Where did you get it?

I have 6 or 8 sheaths that are roughly the same shape but not as pretty. I order them from Amazon. The sizes vary unpredictably. So I have a bunch of sheaths and a bunch of folders and try to match them up.

I'm going from a Shirogorov Neon, which was my EDC for 5 years straight, but just gave to my son. I loved that Shirogorov and how it fit in the pocket. I now have a Grimsmo Rask en route to me. I hope I can adjust to the new dimensions. My fall-back is a CR small CR Inkosi, but I prefer a thin flipper for my EDC.

Neon
- 4.25" closed
- 7.625" overall
- 3.375" blade
- 2.9oz weight

Rask
- 4.6" closed
- 8.125" overall
- 3.5" blade
- 3.125oz weight

Buck 110
- 4.875" closed
- 8.625" overall
- 3.75" blade
- 7.2oz weight

The Gerber Strongarm is perfect for neck carry at 5 inches. A 6 inch blade does not hang with the handle where my hand wants it to be. But there are times that a longer blade would sure be nice, like when I'm poking a pile of sand to see if it's a fire ant colony.

The leather cord is more comfortable than paracord.

It came with the BUCK. Described as a "Custom Stingray"...

I often pocket carry a CS Colossus. Spyderco Chinook is the other one.

I need 3" or less, clipped to my bathers in summer, preferably something corrosion resistant and often FRN.
3.5" for shoulder seasons for pants and 4" or more for winter coat pockets. I carry a SAK on the keychain and a fixed blade in my bag and backpack, so I never feel underknifed. Outdoors I add a saw and a machete, the size will also vary on the season and the weather forecast.

Sebenza 25- at 5 oz and + 3.5 inch blade it the limit for me to carry. Its also the largest knife I own.

8 ounces is my limit for folders. There's just no rational reason for a folder to be heavier than that.

My limit is my SHF full size. Anything larger and there’s a considerable risk of my pants falling down to my ankles. 🫣

5-6oz if wearing a belt...

whole collection if I strap on them suspenders!

"Too Much" is a variable thing depending on2who you are, where you are and what you are doing.

Here in Texdas, I can openly carry about anything that looks like a knife. And with that said:
have been retired since 2003. I do not do much more than Uber around and ride busses in an urban setting. Since the 9/11 attack, my EDC has been a Leatherman Wave in one version or smother. It is compact and versatile, but is right at my weight limit for belt or pocket wear.

However, If you are about to deploy to an active (hot) war zone, then anything shorter than a machete or Katyana may be what you carry all the time . . .and you are fit and younger than ~40. And even that can break down into the divide between dismounted infantry and say, a tank crew.

In 2004, our son went off to Iraq as a Marine platoon leader. Mounted to his plate carrier was either a Chris Reeve Green Beret or a Randall #16-1. Both are 7" blades. Neither is particularly light weight.

A civilian scenario is someone who is through-trekking the 2,000 miles of the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crast Trail: For those folks, weight alone is the controlling criteria.

For folders, handle thickness is as important as weight as far as I’m concerned. I’ll usually carry a 4 inch folder and prefer a slimmer handle in the pocket over a 3-3.5 inch knife with a thicker more comfortable handle. Fixed blades are different, up to maybe 7” with a belt is fine.

I usually save smaller <3.5” knives for special occasions like a wedding or funeral. If for some reason it were both a wedding AND a funeral, I’d probably carry something larger.
