To go along with the "Get to know your fellow sharks" thread, I thought it might be interesting to learn what's behind your avatar choice. Some pretty interesting ones here.

Here's mine:

First, my username "thurin" comes from my love of Tolkien. Thurin is an AKA of Túrin Turambar, the tragic hero in Narn i Chîn Húrin ("The Tale of the Children of Húrin"). If you like Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit, pick up a copy of The Children of Hurin. It's part of the back story that happened long before LotR timeframe (both in writing it and in the history of Middle Earth).

Thurin/Túrin had a helm called Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin. My avatar is a rendering of this helm, also known as the Helm of Hador.

My name viral comes from a vast marketing background and I specialized in internet media for a while, everyone wants to be viral. My avatar the fierce brown best comes from me livin in Alaska and being chased by them a few times. And thurin I love lotr with an undying passion.

Glacier National Park in Montana. I have been to the exact spot where picture was taken, but must admit I did not take the one shown.

Cool thread idea. VAsticks just reminds me of the woods throughout Virginia. The woods around here always look inviting to me.

My Avatar is picture of me. My forum name is Joe Duder because "The Dude" and "Duder" was taken.

Yep, cool thread Thurin!

This is embarrassing but I'll share. I was in junior high/high school (can't remember which one right now), when Jurassic Park the movie came out, and everyone learned about the velociraptor. Well, my last name is Reese and one of my friends on the lacrosse team started calling me the velocireeser. It stuck, and was quickly shortened to velosa. Pretty stupid, I know, but I figured it worked well for my "forum name".

My avatar is the image that is inlayed into Jerry Garcia's guitar "Wolf". I love the Grateful Dead!

Excellent idea Thurin......

My avatar depicts a Great Grey Owl ready to snag its prey. The idea came from reading various threads where forum members would frequently refer to "snagging" a knife during a Fiddleback Friday shark fest. I was inspired by the owls ability to fly in silently and snag with incredible accuracy. While my success during a typical FBF may not equal my avatars natural ability, far from it in fact, I remain inspired to increase my success rate with each passing friday. Thanks to all who have helped me learn the ropes.

My avatar is a Russian flag, thanks to my Russian girlfriend and my recent trip to Russia with her. Trips to places where you can't speak the language are really exhausting, haha.
Rennd stems from the word "Rend" which means to maim or destroy. I found it through a video game I used to play online, there was a sword I used called the "Blade of Rend."

Nice avatars, all! I enjoy learning the meaning behind them.

Mine is me and my wife on a tandem skydive I took her on. My gopro made a sweet rounding effect I thought avatar worthy.

There's nothing complicated about mine, user name is first initial last name, this was the first place where I wanted to be known for who I am. My avatar is a dancing bear gif I made identifying me as a Dead Head, this along with the melting face in my Sig line is a reference to growing up in the 60s. These have been the same in my profile for so long, I can't remember not having them on this forum. The only thing that changes is the quote in my Sig line and that's been the same for quite a while now 'cause I like it. ;)

Maybe it is a little more complicated than I thought ;)

My avatar is based on the mascot of the University of Southern California. I have two degrees from there during the glory days for USC football. (And I don't want to hear any flack from you UCLA fans. My father was a UCLA grad and there were more UCLA graduates than USC graduates in my graduate school class.) Nothing special about my user name. Just my first initial and last name.

You all are gonna laugh... Mine is the "Ultra Music Festival" logo. The world's premier electronic music festival held every March in downtown Miami.

Avatar is the Fountain that is in the middle of the Main quad at Troy University. I hold two degrees from Troy, which also explains half of my screen name. Trojan for Troy Trojans, and Tau is For Alpha Tau Omega. I am one of the founding fathers of my Chapter of ATO.

I have no avatar because I'm invisible....

But RRaconteur is abbreviated from "Rogue Raconteur," which is something I began calling myself back a while now. I'm a pastor, and a big part of how I understand my job involves storytelling (raconteur = storyteller): helping people find their story in God's story, as well as finding God's story in their own. But storytelling is a strange thing that changes both teller and hearer. I feel called to be God's storyteller (a daring identification), and God tends to tell stories that don't go the way we expect--they're rogue stories. So I'm a rogue raconteur.

Edited to add: I just wanted to play too. Looked like a fun game. 😄

My last name is Kirkwood.

My avatar is a reference to a character and a song from Yo Gabba Gabba, which is one of the favorite shows of our 1 year old and 3 year old, which means I've seen every episode eleventy billion times.

Well I found the picture that is my username around the same time as I found the forums, when I decided to make an account I had to put two and two together.

Cool stuff guys -- mine is pretty self explanatory as I am the proud fur dad of a Dalmatian (my second); probably one of my favorite breeds. I'll be cycling in a pic of my boxer soon to keep things interesting. Of note, my profile pic is my alter ego on Fridays ;)

vance is my nickname
&
my avatar are 3 fiddlebacks andy & dylan delivered to me one day

Awesome idea as I've wondered about the origin of some folks' handles. My avatar is a combination of my undergrad study in chemical engineering where I did senior research in catalysis and my online video game playing days. Needed a handle for unreal tournament and half-life (circa freshman/sophomore year), so just added "man" to catalyst. Ironically, I haven't done engineering (well, at least nothing hard core) or video gaming since then :D
My avatar is at the first class I took at the Pathfinder school with Dave Canterbury and Jeremy Janey.

Great idea, Thurin!
My Avatar is pretty self explanatory.
My username was a compromise … "On Edge" or "Edge" is what I am known as in most knife forums, but both taken here, so I tried to be clever and came up with "Ed G" - presumably to be pronounced "Edgy", but that didn't work out so well and everyone just calls me Ed. My name is actually Paul.
