I think mine was a brief mania associated with the cash flush internet. Remember when you could sign up and get 20$ off of your first purchase. And we all signed up (several times in my case) and got virtually free Leatherman Micras? Maybe we didn't get to be dotcom millionaires, but that part was good.

Add a fun memory of bladeforums. I just read SPARK's "I'm shutting down..." and gasped....

I like being part of the effort that led to the Bladeforum Blue Native.

Two "best" memories -- when I found (through these forums) a place in my area to train in the Filipino Martial Arts, and when Bernard Levine was able to tell me something about this knife after 15 years of owning it and trying to learn something about its origins.

The first time I called and talked to Bill Martino at Himalayan Imports. I realized that what sounded like a gentleman and friend-in-the-making on the forum really was such in person. It restored my faith in the Internet as a means of communication.

Thanks Bladeforums! And thanks Uncle Bill!

I was thinking of how to put that, and of course you found the perfect way.

Despite my relatively brief time on the forums, I have several memories of which I'm very fond.

Quite early on in my time here, there was a contest wherein members nominated other members. The prize was a book that Kodiak PA had received duplicate copies of. He decided to give one away, but then the publisher/bookseller stepped in and paid for the book. Lifter4him, Dave, nominated me. I couldn't believe that, and it in itself was a great memory. Then, I won.

A famous maker who lurks on the forums, e-mailed me, and began an e-mail friendship which I treasure.

After a single post on the Survival forum, I received 2 supplies of magnesium for emergency fire starting, from members muzzleup and bugsy malone.

Several forumites have on occasion written me in complimentary fashion about posts. I have also received e-mails from several other makers, which I'll keep forever.

What can I say. This is the most wonderful "place" I've ever been!

i too have talked to and regularly correspong w/a couple of very well known guys, which is pretty cool - posted a prob i had w/a spydie and sal emailed me w/some comment or another, it was a month before i figured out exactly who he was lol (and no he isnt 1 of the 2 )- though i am a relative newcomer, have had a lot of fun, and learned a lot aboout knives, and would like to think made a friend or 2 - the only negative is the amount of $$$$$ this darned forum has cost me - but really enjoy it, will always be here .....

Its been a while since I posted however, I do check in whenever I get a chance. When I saw this thread, I immediately thought of James Mattis and what a wealth of information he was for newbies like myself. He is surely missed but never forgotten.

I almost forgot the times we all missed our chances to trade a battle mistress for several ghillie suits.

#1-I agree with Mike on the Mad Dog flame wars. Also the time Earl wanted to set up a fist fight with me and Kevin, (not our Kevin but MD himself). Gee, it used to be guys would almost fight to buy a MD when one came up for sale. Now it seems you can't hardly GIVE away MD's anymore.

#2-The race to see who would be the first to post on these great forums when Mike and Spark first opened them.

#3-The great friends I've made here. So many and you know who you are but Dexter Ewing, Bob Allman, Michael McLaurin, and Gary Graley come to mind. But ESPECIALLY Dex who has been a friend all these years through thick and thin!

Again, I just want to THANK Mike and Kevin for a job WELL DONE all these years!

It was James Mattis' website that had the note about the Benchmade 9050 (AFO) that he couldn't sell me that prompted me to call him and become an auto-holic. Benchmade led to Microtechs and on to custom folders and autos. I met Gregg (txlazer) on line and was introduced to Ralph Turnbull. And through the forums I wound up getting a taste for Dakes and Corbits and other custom folders and fixed blades. Also wound up finding 1sks.com and 888knivesrus.com and tripleaughtdesign and the other places I have shipped sooo much cash to.

I guess I had more fond memries than I had recalled.

Without any reservation, James Mattis, Bob Irons and other people I have gotten to know in these forums. Some fantastic friendships have started here.

James and Bob are sorely missed they each had a way of holding us together along with many other qualities.

Metting my friends out there, finding a place where my interest does not make me a weirdo and getting the chance to talk to people like Sal and Ron!

Finding this place :)
The wealth of knowledge.
The people.
Lurking for months before signing up to actually (gasp) post.
And not to forget, my new friends :D

I asked a specific question at MD forum about a guy (forgot his name) who said he used to dive with his MD knives. I couldn't get a straight answer from MD, so I switched to BFC. You guys are right, it was the Mad Dog stuff that fueled the fire.
