I've been watching this thread with great interest ever since it started. And I want to thank adammichael for sharing it.
Here is my version of the toolrest:

What I've done is combine michael's toolrest with one I saw over on knifeforums by tmickley :

now that's funny...

Every knife I grind I use a tool rest for the grind up to the heat treat. After heat treat I free hand it to remove the gray stuff.

Mike, I'm looking forward to your announcement! Should be good!

I tested an idea to have two swivel bases instead of Mike's design.
It would work fine but there is a big problem. These swivel bases don't like abrasive grit and will keep jamming. I don't see any feasible solution to that.

I can think of one, see post #1:D

Mike,

Have you tried to find some off the shelf components to alleviate high cost? There are must be some articulating arm manufacturers that might have some ready made components that you might utilize.
Hey, if military and NASA are using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) for cost control why can't we?

Got your email and I am researching the items you linked. It looks promising for some aplications. Do you have a sketch of what you were thinking?

The end block to which contact wheels is attached is fixed to the rails and not moving. Block to which articulated arm attached is moving along the rail. This way we pay more for rail system once and then save on two arm receivers and multiple arms(for each attachment).
Something like this:

Looks good, it has potential.

Regarding the availability of my arm design:
I should know by next Tuesday what the price will be and all the pre sale details. I'll keep everyone posted.

Mike,
if you decide to sell plans... Do you think this project is feasible for a beginner machinist with a manual vertical mill and limited amount of machinist's gadgets?
(I have 6" vise, caliper, micrometer and R8 collets+end mills)
