What is your Favourite Outdoor Activity?

What is the default outdoor activity you do? This doesn't have to be the thing you get to do most often, but the activity you'd choose over anything else? For me, it would be multi-day seakayaking, eventhough I probably get to do it once or so a year. I average 100+days a year in my boat either guiding, instructing or playing. That being said, getting out for anything between two days-weeklong trips is where it's at for me. Getting out on the ocean enables me to link together multiple skills from campcraft to seamanship while always having to adjust to what the sea is offering that day. Sometimes, it's moving against a fast moving tide in order to make my next camp. Sometimes, it's sitting in my tent reading the magazine I brought from cover to cover because condtions are keeping me at bay. Regardless, it's where I want to be and there isn't such a thing as a "bad day", just good days and other sorts of days.

So, what is your default activity?

Interesting thread topic!

I actually can't decide what my absolute favourite activity is. If we go by time spent on a given activity, it is definitely hiking - day-hiking, to be exact. I can often get away for one day of hiking every week, and this really sustains me.

But I prefer to go on multi-day hiking / camping trips that are a bit more involved, challenging, and rewarding. I love arriving at a camp site at the end of the day with my boots looking like this:

For pure wilderness enjoyment, though, my vote goes to snowshoeing. I love the look and feel of the woods in the winter - the silence, the shadows of the trees on the snow, even the temperature. A six-hour off-trail snowshoeing trip through deep powder is my idea of a perfect winter day. All the better if it involves a mid-hike stop for a fire and a pot of coffee.

And then there's canoeing. Now, I can't claim to be a regular paddler, as I usually only get the chance to hit the lake once or twice a year. But my favourite outdoors trips, bar none, involve extended canoeing in the mountains, with camping and day hiking thrown in.

I'm indecisive. But, I do note that all of these activities involve going somewhere, as opposed to staying in one place. So I could say that my favourite outdoors activity is enjoying the outdoors while on the move!

All the best,

Hiking. For me it is where I find my peace in this world. It quiets me and awakens my eyes, ears, nose, muscles, consciousness.

So I could say that my favourite outdoors activity is enjoying the outdoors while on the move!

What he said.

spearfishing/surfing/hiking tie for the top 3, followed by camping i think.

I really spend a lot of time hiking and thoroughly enjoy it.

But the thing I enjoy the most is scouting out locations for, and building, new trails, it has become a passion of mine.

Hunting, Fishing and Camping in any order that comes along. The obvious, listed above is a given.;)

I like hiking/ backpacking to places I've never been or seen before. I'm trying to get in shape so I can go further.

Wow, that's a tough question. I rate most of my outdoor activities fairly even. I guess day hikes with my son are right up there though.

Hands down - my favorite outdoor experience is having my 1 one year riding on my back and my wife by my side on a hike in the woods. Nothing quite like it in the world. I enjoy my familiy and all that mother nature has to offer.

Second - I love to grab a pole and wet a line all by myself. It allows me plenty of time to think. Oh - and if I fish by myself I can make up whatever fishing story I want :)

I don't know if I would consider it my absolute favorite but I really enjoy going out in the back yard and shooting my Benjamin 392 pellet rifle. It doesn't require coordinating any weekend plans or anything like that just pump it up and plink at some cans or squirrels etc.

Hiking, both on a trail and off with my dog. I love exploring new areas, climbing up and down mountains, bushwhacking tough terrain, exploring interesting geologic structures. Just moving through and observing nature does it for me.
