What is your knife/tool style or system in the out of doors?

When I go out I usually bring several knives to test and compare them to each other.

Depending on location and time of year, a combination of the following:

Mora 2010, Victorinox Spirit or SwissTool, Spyderco Endura or Delica, Condor Golok or Barong, Estwing Camp Axe, Gerber folding saw.

I'm thinking of adding a HI khukuri, to the mix. A nice WWII style khukuri and a smaller knife, or even a folder, would probably make a nice survival package. Just a thought.

1 thing I grapple with is style of tools..
more traditional style tools appeal to me but seem sometimes to be out weighed by the practicality of modern implements
I love to carry a nice solid oldschools slip joint..
but low an behold thats when I need a screwdriver..

A Mora Clipper and SAK Hiker are pretty much a mainstay. If Im fishing , then along comes a Leatherman Surge. When Hiking I usually carry a Toolzall. If I need to trim up the paths then I bring along an Estwing hatchet.

Car camping or late fall to early spring I carry;
Chopper, either a CS Trail Hawk or GB mini
A pocket knife, either a SAK Farmer or a Spydie Military
And maybe a 3-4 inch fixed blade depending on the situation and my mood.

In the summer, when hiking, where NOT starting a fire is harder than starting one I carry;
A pocket knife
Maybe a 3-4 inch fixed blade. Again depending on mood.

My chopper seems to do all the work I need. I haven't NEEDED a knife yet and in the summer I rarely even need a blade at all.

I rarely take the same blades twice. I was hunting and camping last weekend, and took these with me. I don't carry blades just to carry them, each has a specific task.
The area I was in has hardwood stands, sand scrub pines, and mixed foliage.

Delica4 in the pocket (I might replace this with my new Vic one hand Trekker).

Chopweiler in the pack, or Recon Scout if I'm saving weight.

And this either on the belt or around the shoulders:

Or the Aurora depending on how I'm feeling.

I'm still experimenting with different knives, so I take stuff to play with & try out. But my standard loadout is a big knife/machete/kukri (I have a bunch to choose from, last time it was the ESEE Lite Machete) + a carbon Mora (bushcraft Triflex) + SAK (Victorinox Ranger) = enough to cover the standard range of knife tasks that I will need to.
I might also take along something just for food prep like a stainless Mora or Opinel, but most food I take camping doesn't need a knife.

Sometimes camping is just an excuse to play with and test knives, so I might take quite a few.

The concept of 'style' makes for an interesting way of looking at this!

Gonna hit the sticks this Sunday if anyone's interested and in the area...
Meet about Noon at the EOC in Stevenson, WA - All are Welcome!!

Hmmm; Style... What's my style??

Cheers,

I live in Maryland. I carry:

Mora, SOK Trekker, and trowel (if backpacking) or Cold Steel Shovel (if camping); if I'm camping I'll add a GB Hatchet (summer) or light forest ax (winter).

Those plus my Delica 4 (awesome folder) and usually an Izula II (neck knife, don't use it too frequently but it is always there, except in the shower.) I carry all but the Wetterlings regularly. It'll get it done.

God bless,
Adam

Boreal forest, northern Minnesota, if it's just a day walk then the following:

SOG Aegis in the pocket or Becker Necker.
Leatherman Wave on the hip or in a pack.
Large fixed blade or a Wetterlings small axe.

If it is a bit more involved than a day hike I generally take a combination of the following:

SOG Aegis in the pocket, or Becker Necker, usually both.
Leatherman Wave on the hip or in a pack.
Large fixed blade, currently either a BK2, BK9 or RC5, this changes frequently and I'm sure once my customs from ML Knives come in it'll be those.
Saw or Wetterlings hunters axe.

I don’t have a standard set-up. I always have a reliable fixed-blade, SAK, and usually a neck-knife. For longer hikes and overnighters I always add an axe and saw. Like RescueRiley I sometimes carry more a more traditional set of tools. Here’s my favorite Nessmuk Trio:

My style is that I'm simple, and my system is basically the same thing as layering clothing.
I start with a Victorinox Hiker(and a Delica 4 that goes everywhere) for just hiking, then add a 4.5" or 7" fixed blade depending on the likelihood of wanting fire, and add a GB small Forest Axe to the 7" if I'm with other people and in a campsite and want a "campfire" instead of something minimalistic.

I'm often switching up tools to try them out as combinations. My most frequent 'over-nighter' set up in 3 seasons is SAK-OHT, small fixed blade (3.5-4") and mid-size blade (6-7"). Sometimes I switch out the mid-size blade for a folding saw, in which case the small fixed gets beefed up to 4"-5".

In winter, I prefer switching the folding saw to a take-down buck saw. I bring an axe when base winter camping, but truly, I don't find I use it all that much aside from splitting stuff. Not that I don't like axes, but when winter camping I prefer bringing a sleep system over-rated to the temperature conditions I'm expecting. I don't really go winter camping under conditions where I rely on fire for heat and as such I don't really bring the tools needed to process a cold night's worth of firewood.

Sak hiker
4"-5" fb
Depending on area and time of year a small axe, machete or just folding saw in pack

I'm pleased to see how many of you guys carry an axe or a hatchet! Often times while reading this forum I get the impression that axes are always too heavy to be worth carrying. Meanwhile the guy posting that is carrying a 10" and .25" thick fixed blade! Hah.

Nice to see so many axes in this thread.

I always have a small bushcraft survival knife with me no matter what. when i go to hang around my semi-perminent shalter i bring a small axe and a medium-large bucksaw, aswell as a firesteel and lighter.
