What is your knife/tool style or system in the out of doors?

My usual outdoors destinations can range from wetlands to pine uplands her in AL. I'm a bit of a gear whore, so I have enough edged tools to carry something different all the time, but I generally go with a classic 3-part "system" like this:

  • Folder - My current choice is either a Victorinox One-Hand Trekker or Outrider. They both have locking blades, but I like the one hand opening of the Trekker and the scissors on the Outrider, so I can never seem to finally chose one over the other.
  • Fixed - I've got a number of 4-5 inch fixed blades, from inexpensive Moras to pricey customs. Currently my favorite in this catagory is my Bark River Aurora. The handle on this knife just fits my hand like no other.
  • Axe - I will sometimes substitute a small machete of folding saw in this slot, but usually I like a mid-size axe like the Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe.

Keep a Vic classic around for the scissors and spare toothpick and tweezers, it complements the OHT and Farmer perfectly.

I try to give most of my tools a fair chance for wilderness use, so what I carry is an ever changing combo.

Lately I felt comfortable with the following combos:

Day hike - a ~4" fixed blade & a multi-tool w/ a mini saw.

For extended stay - I found I need a saw and a large blade or hatchet. And always a 4" fixed blade.

My year round system is pretty cheap, lightweight, and effective.
Silky super accel 210 saw. (felling/reducing dead trees)
Ontario 12" cutlass machete. (battoning, and clearing)
Rat-1 folder. (whittling, food prep, small chores)

Boreal forests of scandianavia.

GB SFA axe + 4 inch knife (Fallkniven F1 or Ontario TAK) + Spydersaw. Sometimes a Leatherman Fuse although i rarely need a multitool while in the woods.

Oklahoma has lots of briars so I always take my gerber brush thinner, BK2, 551 grip or necker, and last but not least leatherman surge or wave.

I typically carry more than I need because I like playing using all my knives. I'll usually take:

Large fixed blade: Dogfather, RD9, and currently more often than not my Condor combat machete on MOLLE webbing of my pack over my right shoulder.

Medium fixed blade: Sometimes by CS Bushman or a BRKT, but almost always my SYKW Regulator prototype. I keep it in the pack and put it on when I stop to make camp.

Multitool: I keep a Leatherman Blast in the pouch of my Regulator sheath. You can never tell when those tools will come in handy with all the junk out there. The file is pretty handy for bushcraft as well. Probably better suited for Urban survival.

Small folder: I always take whatever I have been EDC lately just because its in my pocket on the drive out and back anyway. Not necessary at all.

In the mountains of East Tennessee...

day hikes: hydro pack, 10 essentials and my tracker
one nighters: add a tent and a my sleeping bag
weekends: add a hatchet

when out practicing minimalist survival skills, I exchange the hydro pack for a canteen and cup system, fire steel, and tracker... I'm slowly getting to where I leave everything else.

Where at in east TN? Im in the Cosby/Newport area myself...

I do most of my woods activities in upstate NY. I must be a minimalist because i have always gotten by with a SAK(farmer or tinker), a 3-4" fix blade, and a folding saw.
