WHat is your last-ditch knife.

For future reference, this is how easily self defense topics derail on general discussion. Post on...what is it? ...http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/680-Practical-Tactical for a serious discussion.

If I carried for Self defense it would be my fixed blade, but I don't, so whatever is on me is what I'll use.
Seriously though, how come the majority of people worrying about SD thinks you'd need some big or specialized knife? Kitchen knives are a lot more dainty than most other knives but they'll kill a person just fine. Even the paring knife.

Why carry a .357, .45 or 9mm when a .22 lr will kill someone? If you're in a bad situation then every little bit helps

Never felt the need to carry a gun and I do hear what you're saying.

I'm just trying to point out that most woods/utility knives work just as well as the specialized ones. It doesn't take a deathly knife wound to deter someone and it's surely not hard to cut someone. How many streetfights end up on the ground?
Since I believe normal knives can be nearly as effective, I'd go with the one that has better everyday usefulness.

Lotta moralizing here. :chargrined:

Today it was my North American Arms Black Widow Mag in my waistband and screamin' sharp TOPS CSAR-T Liaison in a boot:

We live in harsh times, so its a good idea to have some backup in you pocket. What knife do you use as your last ditch blade?

At the risk of running foul with the powers that be.
My guess is that no one is going to fess up on such material.
But if and when law and order breAks down to such a point that governments ceases to function;
Only then would back ups become a reality that everyone would assume as a normality.
Until such time, broadcast about actual back ups can only lessen its covert effectiveness for a said individual once it becomes an open secret....

True dat !

I've used this as a last resort.

Spyderco civilian. Just use it to block and let the blade shred apart their tendons with the force and weight of their own strikes.

Or mg personal favorite... Pocket sand!

If it was a "holding down the fort" scenario where I was trying to put distance between myself and the bad guy(s), probably my CRKT Ultima 7 or Buck Nighthawk. These are not knives I could foresee myself having on my person for any reason other than self-defense. If I was out and about in an area where I thought trouble could occur but I needed some utility capabilities too, I'd probably have some sort of big Ontario (SP19 is my favorite) and a Gerber Yari II for up close and personal use. For folders, a Boker Plus Kalashnikov 101, Ganzo 716 or CRKT Hammond Cruiser in that order.

I carry my DPX HEST the great majority of the time. In my grab bag I have an evacuation kit that includes my Randall #1. To me last ditch is what you will carry during an actual evacuation, etc. We went through it during the Monument Fire, when things like that happen you learn quickly what is actually important.

I have carried a Cold Steel Shamshir persian lightweight folder in the past for bear defense

We need a frame-lock flipper paring knife in M90.

Some cheap but strong knife. I ain't sending my expensive knives to the evidence locker.

What does it matter? If you're found innocent you'll get it back. If you're found guilty you'll be in jail anyway. Only way you'll carry a knife in there is if you keister stash it.

Because of drugs. If you shoot someone on PCP (or other "recreationals") with a .22, they are unlikely to feel it in some cases...

Bottom line is - if you feel the need to use deadly force, might as well put them down for good. If I were to "slap leather", there would be a need to do so, and it wouldn't be with .22 caliber. As harsh as that sounds, it's far better for you, and far more humane for the POS if you use a caliber that will stop them, then and there, and make them forget why they were chasing you.

My Dad always told me that .22s have killed more people than any other bullet, but he also told me it was because they were cheap and plentiful. I believe it. My EMT buddies call .22s the "kill ya later bullet". The wound channels are small and twisting, glancing, etc. so sometimes they can't stop you from crashing, so there's that.... Maybe make it more agonizing to the POS? Another thing - try finding .22 ammo sometime! It literally cannot be bought at all in my neck of the woods.

If you need to use deadly force, don't use a double deuce. It's better in every aspect to just use a bigger caliber and put them down.

Also, you said "every little bit helps".... Yes, indeed in that situation it does... So why not use a little bit bigger caliber? Every little bit helps.....

I don't mess around. Someone wants to mess with me, they are going to enter a world of fear and pain that will outperform any nightmare. My sleek weaponry, ultra-violent training and a bloodlust that cannot be slaked will take any assailant by the curlies and twirl them like a cyclone of pants-crapping terror.

This entire post is for the win.

I think you missed my point. I am advocating larger calibers and larger knives. Hell I carry a .357 mag everyday. I was making the comparison that carrying a pocket knife is like a .22 while a big bowie or other fighter is like a larger caliber.
