WHat is your last-ditch knife.

Cold steel spike. Strong, light, cheap. Some have called them shivs. Which is fine especially for a last ditch weapon. I have the scimitar spike which is really a good slicer. Use it for cutting up bait.

I got into a knife fight once. It was fast, brutal and painful. I am just glad we were only using plastic training knives....

Seriously if you're down to a blade to defend yourself you have serious problems. However, if I was going to use a blade to fight I'd go for my Wustof butchers knife. Sharp, strong and I know it cuts meat very well. If I had to use a pocket folder; I would use what I had on me. Usually a Sebenza.

I don't think Chris recommends the Sebenza for shanking duty, but I do love that thing and it is usually what I carry.

I carry two knives most of the time one to use and one in case I'm attacked by a dog. It happens, probably more likely to than a human attack where I live, there's dogs that are tied up that are breeds that can be very dangerous. They can and do get loose, sometimes the owners even turn them out at night. Even in the city I work in, I've had chained dogs in alleys frothing at the mouth to get at me as I passed by, straining at a cheap chain. I'd hate to have one attack me and have nothing. If one clamps down on my arm or leg, it wouldn't be hard to cut it's throat with a knife like this.

Becker bk14 but a knife is a terrible option for self defense, I like cards94's idea of an aluminum bat though:D

I always carry a minimum of 2 knives on me for this reason.
One is a user, usually under 3", and visibly clipped to my front pocket. The other is 5"+ in a back pocket with only a lanyard hanging out.
If I am in the kind of situation where I need to defend myself I plan to throw my visible knife away as a sign of submission and as they watch it out comes the pain of blade #2.
Brand doesnt matter to me in this situation. I'll stab someone with a popsicle stick if that all I've got.

I ain't sending my expensive knives to the evidence locker.

LMAO !! On the flipside, you do get the chance to baffle a jury with your indept knowledge of powdersteels, Ti framelocks and the benefits of steel lockbar inserts.

Dogs are our problem too in poor urban areas. Too many running around loose, many fighting dogs that have been abandoned by the low life types that raised them. Anything sharp between you and them is usually sufficient whether or not you ever have to use it. They sense the danger and go elsewhere. If you were forced to hurt back, it is much quieter in the city than gunfire and much less a problem to explain. Thankfully, changes to our carry laws permit knife carry concealed now. I have a house in the city and one on the farm. The farm is safe and serene but it took over 100 stitches to close the pit bull wounds in my legs in 2011 as I went into the city Post Office.

Yup. Same here. I don't walk around with the idea I'll use my knife for self defense and I wouldn't feel comfortable. I feel alot more comfy using my pump shotgun or even an aluminum softball bat.
A hatchet or even a hammer if I could not get to my baseball bat.

Unfortunately this isn't a thread about hammers and baseball bats. And most people don't feel comfortable walking around with either of those. But, people do carry knives mostly concealed.

I just ordered a Cold Steel Talwar XL fully serrated for a last ditch backup and for when I can't carry my CCW. I plan to make a belt sheath or try IWB carry. I'll always have my sheeple friendly edc folder on me for normal tasks though.

For future reference, this is how easily self defense topics derail on general discussion. Post on...what is it? ...http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/680-Practical-Tactical for a serious discussion.

+1 I was about to make this comment also. Pose your question in the Practical Tactical section, and you'll get more of the responses that you're looking for. When questions of this nature are posted in the General section, the thread usually gets derailed by comments regarding the wisdom of using a knife for self-defense, or the likelihood of ever having to defend yourself in the first place. These are interesting points to debate, but when you have a simple question that you're trying to get an answer to, it can be frustrating.
