What is your "pet peeve" when it comes to knives?

I admit, I'm guilty of flicking my CRKT M-21... I can just as easily open with the thumb studs, and I don't flick hard at all, but the CLICK! of the locking mechanism snapping into place is so satisfying!

This doesn't exactly apply to knives, but... My biggest peeve is katana fan boys, claiming that the katana is the best sword ever, and it can cut through steel armor and bullets. Then they go and talk about how European swords weighed 40 lbs, and that knights couldn't mount their own horse when wearing armor. It just... man! Pisses me off.

three letters frn it just feels cheap too me and even tho my main edc is frn spyderco native another thing is a person that thinks your knife has to cost 200$ and up for it too be consider quality or some who trys to cut down a tree with a ten dollar pocket knife and then expect me feel bad when they get tetnus from the rusty blade closing on their hand haha thats a true story stupid tyler

"Pet peeves"? Hmmm....

How about when some genius makes the "Folding knives are meant to fold" statement when discussing knife locking mechanisms.

Folding knives are meant to fold, lol, that's classic!

And Lol @ Chuck Manson

I do prefer fixed blades though.

on a related note I greatly dislike poor people who think just because I believe my expensive folder is objectively better than the toy they have that I am some sort of elitist.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people use the word "poor" to describe someone who doesn't mind using less expensive knives or equipment to do the same job. Quality and cost are up to the individual.

BUT...

It's also annoying when you have a nice new expensive knife and someone tosses out that "my sub-$30 knife can do what yours can and more." Kind of like rain on a parade.

I like the high end folders as much as the next guy, but what can your sebenza or strider do that's so much better than the 30 dollar folder? and will you be willing to do it with your high end knife?

I can only speak for my strider since I never got a chance to use one of the sebenzas I owned hard:

run an edge at 30 degrees or lower and yes I would.

pry and not have the lockup slip and yes I would.

not flex when cutting very hard material like pressure treated wood and yes I would.

get replaced for free as long as I didnt mod it and I would certainly hope so lol.

life is too short to worry about dollars and cents, I bought the knife I felt could do what I wanted it to do and worried about the money aspect as a secondary issue. besides I dont exactly view a sebenza or strider as being high end when you consider what something really nice like a Mayo goes for.

yes but are those capabilities worth that many dollars? the operative word here is "want". for the average person they don't need that much knife capability. most use a knife for cutting. mostly you just have pride of ownership. the "my knife is more expensive than yours" syndrome. some guys have the mentality that if a certain individual can't or won't by the highest end knives that they are less of knife nuts. if you like your expensive knives fine just don't be annoyed when someone else expresses the opinion that for his purposes 30 dollar knife is as good as yours. maybe you're just annoyed that in spite of your expense, the other guy isn't impressed.

Who's impressed by how much a knife costs? I'm impressed by the quality, the materials used, how solid the knife is, and generally impressed more by handmade customs. It just so happens that the things that impress me cost money and sometimes they cost alot of money. I'm generally unimpressed by a thirty dollar folder no matter who makes it. It may be able to cut just as well as an expensive folder with a super steel, but for how long? Is the handle material going to hold up in extreme cold or if I lay it down on really hot asphalt? Am I going to be able to cut up boxes for an hour while every so often hitting a staple a not have to worry about chipping the hell out of the blade?

Yes, in most cases a thirty dollar folder can do the same thing as a five hundred dollar folder, but in some cases that thirty dollar folder is going to fail you in some way or another while the five hundred dollar folder will most likely keep on truckin.

you're willing to spend 400 dollars because you're afraid your folder will chip if it hits a staple. that's your choice. for me here in the Philippines where 400 dollars can feed 10 families for a month, that seems a little obscene. I would understand it if your life depended on your folder but fear of chipping? hahaha. but I wouldn't want to push my opinion down your throat. don't push yours down mine

How about paying hundreds of dollars for a nice "high end" knives and have them arrive from the factory with dull edges. :thumbdn: ...Oh well, at least I do enjoy sharpening my blades. :)

-Or expensive fixed blades that come with poorly constructed sheaths that dull and/or scratch the hell out of the otherwise beautiful blades.

I'm not pushing anything down your throat. You asked what a $400 dollar folder can do that a $30 folder can't and I told you. Don't judge me for carrying an expensive knife. You can laugh all you want at the fact that I don't want my $400 blade to chip. It shows me the type of person I'm trying to have an adult conversation with. What seems obscene to you moneterily does not seem so to me. If you're happy carrying a $30 folder then that's fine. Carry a butter knife for all I care, but if you think you're going to change my mind about what I like to spend my money on and what I like to carry then you need to think again. I carry what I carry because I like to carry it and that's the end of the conversation. If you're pet peeve is expensive knives then don't buy one, but don't bash someone that does.

I'm definitely with Tony on the knife cost conversation. As with all things in life- you get what you pay for, and no one pays for what they do not need (be that "need" the desire to own a pretty knife, which there is nothing wrong with, or wanting to get the best materials/craftsmanship). I at least have had plenty of $30 folders that never last too long, and when I think about it if each one lasted a year or so and I had like 7 or 8 in total? That's 8 years with a new knife each year for what... $240? I personally would prefer buying someone's used sebenza or a nice BM folder and just using that all 8 of the years.

As far as pet peeves go-

blade play
"rattling" when the knife is closed
when people get scared when they see I have a 2.5inch folder
people not using knives (of any type) correctly, i.e. while cutting
liner locks in general, I don't really like to have my hands in between the knife and the handle (thick mono or frame locks usually take this peeve away)

Here are my top 3

1) A dull knife out of the box. It's unacceptable; I don't expect polished sharp on all my knives, but if they need to still be reasonably sharp.

2) Not having some form of choil (I think that's what it's called). I'm not too crazy of the edge running the entire length of the blade on my folders (kind of like the Tenacious). I know I'm a clumsy oaf and will cut myself.

3) Poor blade retention.

My pet peeve is those who act superior for using knives without locks.

my pet peeve are people who refuse to see innovation and try to ram their opinions down other people's throats.

Hahaha, take it easy, guys. Nobody's ramming anything into your throat... at least I'm not. Nor am I acting superior. Just stating a simple opinion, which is the point of this thread. Take a deep breath, count to ten, whatever you have to do.

I don't carry a 30 dollar folder but i sure don't look down on anybody who does. expensive knives are not my pet peeve and just because I don't carry a sebenza doesn't mean I don't like it. one of my pet peeves are the people who do, and act all superior to the ones who don't. you carry anything you want but it doesn't mean that you can declare open season on guys who are not impressed. last post. I'm walking away from this thread.
