What is your "pet peeve" when it comes to knives?

...just wondering, do you mean that they run their thumb DOWN the length of the edge  ,or are you talking about rubbing across (perpendiclar) to the edge? Because that IS a pretty effective and safe way to feel/test the level of sharpness IMHO. :)

...my peeve is when people look at you like your Chuck Manson for carrying a 2" bladed folding knife.

-Or when someone asks to "look" at your 200+ dollar knife, then imeadiately throws it at a tree, or trys to cut a brick in half with it, because they think that any knife that costs more than $20 should be indestructable! :grumpy:

and then they destroy your 200$ knife they always exhibit a big surprise and say: is that costs 200$? It performs just like a 20$ knife!:D

-combo blades as the only blade option for an otherwise nice knife
-blade play
-people comparing their walmart "knife" to a high end well made and maintained knife
-watching a "knife sharpener" at a gun show do a regrind and put an almost perpendicular bevel to a blade
-letting your inlaw see your brand new knife and he drops it off the deck

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices that. When people recommend a 45 degree edge, these sharpening people should be told it's 45 total, not per side. If you want a good laugh, watch some of the sharpening "tutorials" on youtube. Some are tolerable, some are good, but about 50% are hilarious, at least to people who frequent knife forums.

I wouldn't call it a pet peeve, but I find myself supremely annoyed by people who buy "hardcore, hard-use, tactical folders" (Strider, Emerson, etc...) and cut nothing but envelopes, cardboard, and string

I wouldn't cut string with my Strider.
We all know how brittle S30V is!:p

I hate that customs don't cost as much as production models...especially those with rare handle materials and gemstones.

I hate rust.

I don't like nail-breakers.

I hate trying to figure out which knife to carry "today". What a pain! :D

I hate knife laws that restrict me to 2.5" folders that cannot be opened one handed. (I voted for the other guy.)

I hate non-stainless steel. "Patinas" are just nasty looking stains, to me.

my pet peeve is that more quality folders aren't sold in high carbon, non stainless steels. Stainless steel used to just be an excuse to have a crappy knife, with a crappy edge, that chipped a lot. Oh, but it didn't stain, whoopdy doo!

Now, with all these super steels it's obviously another matter :D

And you can easily prevent a patina on most carbon steel blades, unless you're in some crazy humid or salt water environment.

2. Amateurs using a knife to pry or cut things that a knife was never meant to cut. . . like aluminum cans

Try it sometime. Its amazing how much sheet aluminum, in the form of drink cans, a knife can cut and still shave hair off your arm.

another pet peeve are guys who buy knives and carry them to show off not using the knife for anything and not even touching the factory edge so that they can sell them later as mint.
