What it feels like to lose a (special) Sebenza

Congrats on finding the knife.

I lost a Sebenza once for six weeks, and then found it. Then about a month later, I lost it again, forever.

My replacement has the clip removed and rides deep in the bottom of my pocket.

Seriously, glad to see you found yours.

Too bad u didn't have a metal detector .I was at the beach with one, someone asked me If I can help them find a necklace lost, he showed me the area he was last in & I found it in 10 minutes.

Absolutely too nice to be losing.
I would have looked as hard and often as you did, but might have never been able to see it through the tears. :)
Congrats on the recovery.

Cheers on your perseverance! Good story to remember the next time I lose something.
Weird that it seems harder to lose the cheaper and less meaningful items we carry.
:(
Still, Congrats on finding that!

I decided to take it down and make sure all was well.

I wish I would have taken pictures, but you all already know what a clean Sebenza takedown looks like. It was really clean inside. It had a little of the sticky black build up near the washers, but like always it just wipes off. Point being, after being kicked around (probably) in the sand, it was no worse than I would have expected for a few months of pocket time.

That said, it seems smoother than ever with some fresh grease.

The detent ball is wearing a track in the Damascus and the corduroy feeling I used to get when opening is almost gone. I am not sure I'm glad about that, but I figured it may happen with all the burnishing.

Awesome story bro! loved the pictures too! Im so glad you were able to find it. thats just worst feeling in the world!

I gotta say, your story is about the best example of why a lanyard is a good idea. I always thought of them as a deployment aid/decoration, but this adds a whole other dimension to their practicality

That is a beautiful Knife, you are lucky to have found that, it almost slipped away.
It sure is a horrible feeling to loose something nice like that.

This is a big reason why I had to quit Sebenzas and started carrying an Izula II.
If I lose it, it would suck but it wouldn't SSSUUUUCCCCKKKK the way losing a Sebenza would.
Especially a freakin' damascus micarta! Sure glad you were able to find it, man.

Me too!

So far I am not hating this lanyard. It just might stick after all.

I would hate to lose this knife because of what it symbolizes for me. The monetary value would not be trivial, but it certainly does not EVEN compare to the past hardships that it created our relationship (I bought it as a gift to myself for surviving some really hard times).

Perhaps that doesn't hold the same gravity for others, but suffice to say, the sentimental value of this knife dwarfs the monetary cost.

I am very glad you found it. I have lost a few knives myself. Some cheap some more expensive and some with sentimental value that trumps any monetary value. Those are the worst to lose as they can never be replaced. I still think about the ones I have lost and will literally never forget them. One particular knife I just cannot get over losing. It had sentimental value and was not cheap and is also irreplaceable.

Wow. Congratulations on finding it … I would be sick if I lost such a beautiful knife, especially if it had that kind of special meaning.

Thanks for sharing.

Then, you certainly understand;)

I'd be happy to open this discussion to others who want to share their sentimental attachment to their blades.

My story starts with the death of my father-in-law, followed by the death of my best friend and father a two months later. A week after that I found myself sitting in an attorney's office discussing bankruptcy and how I and my family could be on the street (and oh yeah, I lost my job too). I'll spare you the details, but a year and a half later, I felt like I had survived the tough times (didn't lose quite as much as I initially feared...but I lost a lot).

I decided to buy this knife to celebrate surviving it.

If I can offer anything from the experience, it would be to say that stuff is stuff, it's the people we love and sentimental items that really hurt to lose;)

Glad you made it through, got this knife, and made lasting memories with it. It's been a while but, sorry for your losses. That must've been a very hard time.

scary! very nice story, glad to see a happy ending to this possible tale of woe. looks like an expensive version too. what about those fancy sheaths? any one ever see cutlerylovers?

Glad you found it. While I prefer to pocket (using the clip) for EDC, your story really makes me feel I should get a sheath for those labour intensive days. Lanyards are just not for me, a sheath seems like the safest place.

I just lost my this week. Made in 1998, small sebenza BG42. I bought it new and had it as an edc for 5 years. I'm split in buying another one. I'm now carrying my last Chris Reeve, a Mnandi. Has anyone bought another, and did it replace your "special one". I don't think any new sebenza will replace the small sebenza. Not sure if its worth carrying such an expensive knife anymore. I've heard many just give up.
