What I've learned in 6 months of knife collecting

The same could be said of cars, guns, watches, etc. Wait a minute! Come to think of it, the same thing could be said about anything you have to pay for! You could buy a used Honda and it will get you from point A to B just as well as some fancy 50k+ dollar sports car. You can get a HI-point firearm and it will go bang just as much as some 3k+ dollar Wilson Combat 1911. You can buy a dollar store watch and it will tell time just like a Rolex would.

You were doing fine until you hit Hi-Point. Squeeeze that trigger and you may hear the sound of silence.

Knives that are actually used get cosmetic flaws, yes?

Sell all of your leftover "pointy pieces of metal" and get a custom from a reputable maker. Hold the knife in your hand and if that doesn't move you...
Seek counseling.

Actually, at least in my experience, they are quite reliable. They look and feel like crap, but they work.

Unless he edited his post before I got to read it, he never claimed to be an expert the way one poster seemed to think he did. Also, the comment about the fixed blade costing more than $130 specifically said "FOR A TOOL" which is very close to what I've heard several people on this forum quote Jeff Randal as saying. I've never heard him say it, but others (on here) have said that he says a $6 machete is all you really need and that 90% of the knife market is BS. Right? Isn't that what some of you have claimed he says? I find it interesting how differently he is received when the message is so similar.

As for me, I like expensive knives. I KNOW for a fact that certain steels make a task easier. SR101, for example, is worth all the fuss. Also, while my Benchmade Nimravus is a great carry piece as is my ESEE 5, I still plan on dropping over 2bilz on a ZT 0100 in about 45 days. I don't have a Hummer sittin on spinnaz, but I love me hardware :-D

Stop collecting so much , start making :)

why stop at 1/2 an addiction when you can get seriously hooked ?

Maybe I made a wrong assumption about his claiming to be an expert but it seems to me that he's making blanket statements which are declarations of great knowledge and insights about knives, steels, and knife companies. Ergo=expert.

Actually I think the OP WAS moved. He drooled over the Lion SR-1 Ti. and who wouldnt?!? He will succumb to this dreaded affliction, after all, he is here on BF hehe

Maybe You should post less....and read more...he made no such declarations of great knowledge. He has 1 post not 10 posts a day. I think there are elements of truth in his post. I know some guys over 70 who don't see the point of me owning more than 3 or 4 knives. Might as well have a hammer collection

What were all those then? Knock, knock jokes?

as you say 6 months of collecting, why not pick a couple and do six months of bushcraft,or survival, then comment on steels, you`ll then be able to tell the difference,...ps i do agree with most of your comments,i`m not a collector ,but i see a lot of knives in my line of work, watch out because in my opinion collectors are fanatics, you dont seem to far gone, are you going to give up collecting, and congrats to you for a ballsy post

[4] Almost all of the knives discussed here on B.F are just sharp pieces of pointy metal.

And Patek watches are just pieces of rounded metal and leather and NASA spaceship are pieces of aluminium and silicon ;)

Why did you begin your genius statement with "almost"? Are any of the knives discussed here more than pointy pieces of metal to you? Have you seen any talking knives on the forum lately?

Trolls are entertaining :)

Question for the OP, how much was your vehicle, ever buy a NEW vehicle, how long does a vehicle last you. Using your logic you should only be driving say used honda civics and keeping them until the wheels fall off. A vehicle after all is really only a motorized piece of metal that one uses to get from point A to point B. Moreover I bet if your married you have knick knacks and paintings in your home. Since you claim you an afford a $500.00 I bet some of that "art" is very expensive and all it does is sit, hang, stand, etc. in the last place someone put it in, and again it can only be looked at, what about all those minutes no one is around to look at it? Is is still enjoyable or even "art" if no one is around to see it? I could go on, but I think you get the point.

You've been here since April, posted twice with your second post being the most subjective post I've seen here in a while so congrats on that given some of the members we have, that is really saying something. Additionally you went on to insult everyone on a knife forum web site who ever bought a NEW knife, every spent over $130.00 on a fixed blade, and even found time to side swipe the knife companies themselves by effectively labeling them as PUSHERS. If the knife companies are the pushers/dealers, oh I get it, were the crack heads. Your off to a running start there Mr. Iron Blader, let me be the first to congratulate you on that fine post there. Way to really win over the home crowd.

thats a good point, but he did say collecting, if he were collecting cars,i`m sure they wouldn`t get driven, except maybe on a sunday drive

First of all, knives to me are fun. Yes they're tools, but first and foremost, to me, they are fun.

Second, I wouldn't, even if I could, spend hundreds or thousands on a knife. To me they are not that much fun. (although I have spent well over a hundred)

Third, I have spent hundreds on yo-yos. Yes yo-yos. Why? Because they to me are fun also. I have my users and some I have never thrown.

Fourth, who cares what any knife costs. It is either worth it, to you, or it isn't.

Enjoy your knives,
Jack

What the OP has learned in 6 months is that knives are the wrong thing for him to be collecting. Time to leave, young fellow, and find something else you can feel passionate about. Maybe Hummel figurines or silver English tea pots will flip your switch.
