What Khukri is Best for Me?

Hello, this is my first time posting here. I am making this thread to ask about what khukri is the best for me. I have definately decided on Himalayan Imports as the maker, but i'm not sure which model would suit me best.

Here are the tasks I would be performing with it:

Cutting down a sapling about ½ - 2/3 inch diameter
Whittling a sapling into a stake
Digging a pit-trap
Cutting down tall grass
Whacking off small branches
Hacking through VERY heavy brush (Alder, overgrowth and the like)

If it makes any difference, I will also fly fish and camp, perhaps there is a khukri suited to this...

Thanks in advance for the help!

I recommend the Ganga Ram special.
However, this is not a digging tool and I strongly encourage you to use a shovel or trowel for digging purposes.there is no knife that will dig well and then cut well.
Soil contains rocks and moisture, two very bad things for a knife blade to eat.

all of the khkuris will work, but the ganga ram is my personal recommendation for the kind of work you are talking about.
All of the kamis make good ones.
As for me, I'm a kumar fan, but maybe you will be a burafan.
You always get what you pay for and these are damn nice knives.

I personaly find the WWII 16.5 to fufill my "not to sure what I'm up against" stuff.

And Danny is true. I dont realy recoment using any blade as a shovel. If you have too...well ok than. But to meen to use it...trowles are cheeper.

Mr. G.S.?

Not sure it's my business, but I find your email address very offensive.

I am pretty much deciding between a WW2, 15 inch Ang Khola and a villager right now...

Kismet: It was the only free email adress I could get, sorry if it offends you. You shouldn't have to look at it that often. You should have seen the other adresses at T-shirt hell.com

I'm with Danny. Ganga Ram. However besides digging I don't think many khukuris are very suited to cutting grass, unless the grass is very stiff.

I'd say AK wor WWII for anything/everything. you can dig in the ground with these, they'd make okay sod cutters.

If you want a lighter blade with more reach, but not fer digging in the ground, get the kobra, sirupate, or Gelbi special in the 18-21 inch range.

GS, if that was my choice I wouldn't have an email address.

And ANYONE can get an address at Yahoo.com unless maybe one has abused the service there. :grumpy:
Personally I think you're just trying to make a statement considering where you got the address and it doesn't fit in well with this group.
Whay don't you go to Yahoo, get yourself a respectable email address and come back and try again.
I for one would have more respect for you, that is unless you are BuraFan again?

overkill...

Get a 15" Sirupati or BAS

What you need is a great all-around and either of those would fit the bill...

Thank you very much for those who answered! I now have a much better information base to make my decision on.

And for those that don't care for my email adress, I am honestly a bit suprised that you looked at my profile before answering. And I am also suprised that Yvsa would assume I was trying to "make a statement". If you don't care for my company, then fine, but please refrain from insulting me. And yes, Yvsa, I found your response insulting. It's not like I am trying to display my adress to the entire world, its not my signature or my tag.

Ghost squire-- we've had some troll problems around here lately, so people are a bit on edge.

I'd recommend either a BAS or 16.5" WWII for an all-around khukuri. Keep your eye open for the deals Uncle Bill posts, and you should be able to pick up a blem BAS for around $60.

I generally look at the WW2 as a good all round Khuk (not that I have much to compare it too) as it is a far better chopper than my BAS and anything it can't do the chances are the Karda will do it. As far as digging goes, get an entrenching tool, pretty much guarenteed to do anything you want ;) . I have used mine for everything from digging (obviously) to chopping wood, works nicely. The only time I can think of using a Khuk of any sort with earth is as a sod cutter as Ferrous said (I was looking for the right word, thanks for that one), for cutting through the turf before you dig as well as cutting it into manageable chunks.

15" Sirupati or perhaps a 18". I think that would cover most of your described needs.
and...
hotmail.com
mail.com
yahoo.com
all free and easy

Yvsa, funny you should mention that. I just used my ignore list this morning for the first time in a long while:) .

Mr. G.S.

This is an excellent analysis of the shapes of the H.I. Khukuris by Dan (Pendentive, Knife-maker, Paper-shredder).

http://www.himalayan-imports.com/faq/physics/Khukuri_Dynamics.html

Generally, anything in the 15-18 inch range will perform for all of the tasks you list. But dirt and rocks are the enemies of steel edges and unless you had NO option, would not be good for any blade.

Your height and hand-size, and general strength are also factors. The Gorkha people are of smaller stature and most of their working khuks are in the 15 inch range. The Nepal tools are used for everything, by everyone...if that is any help.

(re: the email address? As I said, it was not really my business. I much prefer the new one, however. Many people investigate the information given due to past issues. If a person does not want something seen, they need not post it.)

Welcome.

(Edit: Yvsa is a great man. Be VERY careful with casual comments about him.)

(And yet a SECOND edit: The email address had been changed to a Yahoo address when I first posted this information and welcomed this man. I thought we would just move along.:(

It's back to the vulgarity. I am sorry I ever mentioned it. Well,no...I'm not. I AM sorry it went as far as it did.)
