What kind of knife do you have in your car?

I have one of those Cutlery Shoppe Gryphon Terzoula designed fixed blades stuck in between the drivers seat and the console. This is the one with the 4" blade and the cordura sheath. Even wedged down between the seats, it does not bind and comes out very quickly. Plus, its sharp enough to scare the hair off a gnat's ass!

I keep a small Gerber multitool in my car at all times. I forgot its name. It is shaped like a box with a plastic top. It has a flashlight and scissors but no pliers. It also has a plain clip point and serrated sheepsfoot blades. I figure a multitool is about as non-weapon as I can get yet keep a blade for any emergency.

Cheap 4 inch double edged dagger from United. I have it slid into the map compartment on the driver side door for easy access. I would not keep an expensive blade in the car, to risky in case of theft.

I have a Meyerco Rescue One on the driver's side visor, a Cold Steel Mini-Tac hanging from the steering column and a Buck Nighthawk tanto under the passenger seat.

Hey guys - GR8 replies - and an amazing variety of answers.

The purposes of "a knife in the car" are, IMHO divided to three:

self defense, emergency (as in exiting the car after an accident) and getting stuck and having to get the car moving with as little tools as possible.

My question was originally directed to the first subject, but after reading all the useful ideas I realized the two others are almost as important.

the point is - the last one is covered by what I carry on my person, and I was thinking of the knives I should have accessible in the car, while seated and with the seat belt - a position that prevents me from immediate access to both my IWB gun, my front pocket folder and my under-all-my-clothes neck knife.

I got many ideas on locations and I also have something to do with the old Victorinox that EdRozen knows I bought many years ago and couldn't find anything to do with....

10x everyone for your kind answers.

I carry a schrade 4"skinner in the door pocket of my truck, a leatherman supertool in a holster on my belt, and a schrade pocket folder. I've also been known to carry a stiletto auto in the seat cover pocket. (double edge)

Well lessee...I usually carry a production white serrated blade in a sterile wrap..purloined from my last visit at Wendy's. It rests discreetly in the glovebox next to a couple of paperclips, dried up pens, and a broken pair of sunglasses. Anything else has to be left to your imagination....if I told ya I'd have to kill ya.

I'll just say I'm a good Scout and leave it at that.

You have touched on a touchy situation!!!

In NYC, if you are pulled over and for any reason, the officer decides to check the car out-frequently refered to as a pull and peek-where they pull you over and take a peek inside your vehicle, if you have ANY type of blade not in plain sight of the officer, they can get you on concealed weapons charges. Some of you law-savy blade carriers may think not, and technically you maybe right, but talk to a cop from the city, and any traffic cop will admit otherwise!

It is because of this, that I carry a Ready Edge hanging from my ski rack key chain, slid over my signal lever, I keep an old beat up/used gerber tool in glove box, and a CS Bushman in my toolbox in my trunk. Of course, on my person, there are easily three other knives, at least one of which could get me locked up at any moment!

When leaving my house once with my Chris Reeve, my father asked if I would miss it if I lost it somehow. Damn right I would! That day, on the way to the rifle range I was pulled over by a state trooper. All rifles were in back seat, locked in cases, seperate from ammo, with bolts removed. When I brought this to the officer's attention, he seemed more concerned about the CRK stick out of my right hip, then about the three hunting rifles in my car!

Goes to show you, a knife on the hip is better than a slug gun in its case!

Nothing of real value in my truck, but still useful; SAK Tinker, SOG serrated Autoclip and Ontario Spec Plus 10" tanto. These should handle about anything I am likely to encounter (along with what I am carrying

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

I carry a STIFF KISS mounted under my dash. As far as removing myself in an emergency from my car, just about any knife handle, or multitool would break a window. If your vehicle is damaged serious enough that you couldn't get out, chanses are that you wouldn't be in very good shape either. No matter what you carried, you wouldn't be able to cut your roof off. To help someone else out of a damaged vehicle, I would carry a large knife that has a blunt tip (for prying), is heavy enough to chop, and is thick enough to be used as a prybar. Spec Plus has a tool that would do well in such an emergency situation. As far as getting my vehicle mooving again with a minimum amount of tools, I always carry a LM super tool, Spyderench, SOG crosscut, pocketwrench II, credit card tool, and a Pelican II flash light. Due to the potential risk of not being able to summon help, I normally carry a large assortment of tools also. Although I have done it before, it is still foolish to asume that your multitool will "handle whatever comes".

Repeating old cliches don't' make them true.

Now - repeat after me:

A knife is superior to a gun at close range.
Cars are confined-close spaces.
Drawing a gun in a car is difficult.
Manipulating a gun in a car is difficult.
Unless you are 21 feet or more from your assailant he WILL strike you with his knife before you are able to draw/aim/shoot/take him down. (Depending on your skill level and awareness).
If you are stabbed deeply with a knife in the upper body - you're chances of surviving - let alone winning the fight - are low. Very low.

Mini-slugger in the lower door pocket and a Cold Steel tanto in the rear left side pouch. Superleatherman in the center console and a Browning 603 shoved between the split in the 60/40.

And then there's the blades on the bod!

Cold Steel VG in the compartment in the driver's side door; with that big serrated blade I imagine I could cut through a seatbelt with a swift stroke if I ever (shudder) had to.
