So my cat brought me in a present this morning. I was at my desk and look down at my feet and there was this little guy. It was out of context so I panicked and killed it. I thought it was a baby rattler, but it wasn't. I feel really bad because it didn't have to kill it.

Trying to tell it's back apart from it's head is a little hard, maybe a cotton mouth, it doesn't quite look like a copper head. Where do you live that will help narrow it down. Of course I am by no means an expert an am only familiar with the snakes in my area, mostly from encounters with them and not reading up on 'em so I could be in left field here.

looks like a rat snake... or maybe a bull snake... would need to see the pattern full on from the top to have a better idea...
good kitty!

Joe will be the man. He knows these kinds of things! I just know it's not venomous from looking at it.

Where are you at, bro?

I would also say it looks like a dead snake. Not necessarily the best kind of snake, but not the worst. They don't bite much, and generally harm few people. They may, however, frighten some who are given to fear of snakes. In their natural state, dead snakes tend to move very little and typically decay at a rate comparable to that of other varieties of dead critters of similar size. The best course of action when encountering a dead snake is to avoid it and stay upwind to avoid the smell.

I'm not Joe, or stay at a Holiday Inn last night ......

But it looks like a common Garter snake to me. I've played with dozens of the cute lil' critters ;)

Now you gotta eat it!

Actually, if your cat punctured it's skin it would have died anyways, cat saliva is some nasty stuff.

Not joe as others have state but i'de say just your old run of the mill garter or a rat snake we get those in our area all the time def. not venomous.

I live in the Napa Valley. I know its not venomous, just panicked when I'm walking barefoot, first thing in the AM. I was guessing a garter too....
