What kind of snake is this?

It's a neonate (new born) "Pituophis catenifer" or otherwise known as a - new born Gopher Snake.

Here is a pic of a mature one

yep its a goffer snake harmless but the big ones hurt like hell when they get you, we have them in every square inch in baker city

I read through the whole thread and I just want to let everyone have a little warning about snakes, now, in The United States. Be very careful, there have been freak accidents, like a woman unloading rattan furniture that was bitten by a Krait here in Maryland years ago. Freak accident but someone could have picked it up just thinking it was a colorful and harmless snake and with deadly results...

Not too long ago, we had something similar happen in Melbourne. A highly venomous brown snake was found in a rubbish bin in the middle of the CBD, thankfully no-one was hurt.

As many have said. Bull snake. We have tons of them here is Colorado. Same family as pine snake, rat snake. If the cat brought it to you, it was most likely not poisonous. Or your cat would have been bitten, and not in the mood to play with it. Better safe than sorry, but no need to kill. Most of our poisonous snakes, in the US, are pit vipers that have the triangular head. The only other is the coral snake. Here in the US the the saying -Red to black poison lack, Red to yellow kill a fellow- works. In south America there are types that don't follow that saying, so don't count on it being a milk snake or other harmless imposter. Respect for any wild creature is always a good idea. They are always fighting for there lives. :D

If it was a Hognose then I would be glad you killed it.

David, why? That's like posting a picture of the victim of a Pitbull, Doberman or Rottweiler bite and saying you would be glad if they were all killed. It's just puzzling, your reasoning. I know a lot of people hate and despise snakes of all kinds. I am not a lobbyist for venomous snakes. If they all died it wouldn't bother me a bit, the non-venomous snakes would then take the place of them and that would be that.

But to say that you would be glad to see non-poisonous and very beneficial snakes to get killed is just irrational to me and a fairly bizarre statement considering the quote in your signature line. :)

I think you're taking it out of context.

I have a 6 year old. That's the only reason I would kill a venomous snake if it were in my house vs. a non-venomous one. Same goes for a squeezer.

Dude I take insects back outside in my own hand when it would be easier to kill them. I don't dislike snakes, pitbulls or anything else.

David,

I'm not taking anything out of context, nothing at all.

If it was a Hognose then I would be glad you killed it.

There is nothing about a kid or anything else, just the mention that if it was a Hognose then you were glad you killed it. How am I taking anything out of context? What is so special about the non-poisonous Hognose snake that makes it more worthy of death than some other non-poisonous variety?

I am NOT one of the defenders of poisonous snakes, especially if you have kids. If you have Rattlers on your property, I don't give a damn if you make a concerted effort to kill everyone you see on your property. But I'm also no taking anything out of context...
