What kind of snake is this?

As well as *typcially* non-venomous has long slender tails, such as the dead one. Venomous taper off more abruptly in the back end. Again, typically. Here's a pic that Joe posted up of a Copperhead. See how thick the body is and how fast it tapers off? I don't kill any snake unless I'm absolutely sure that it can do harm and is in an area to do harm. For the most part, I let all venomous and non-venomous live. I didn't even kill the Copperhead that bit me.

Your a cool guy. Nice to see people respect animals like they deserve :thumbup:

Whoa, wait a minute, If you pegged me for some kind of Animals Rights person you went down the wrong track. The more snakes are in the world, the less rats! I just don't screw with nature that much unless I'm hungry. Then all bets are off!

It's a Corn snake. But i can't tell what famoly it is from becauce it was only 1-2 mounths old if i had to guess from the looks of it

It's not a corn snake. They don't range that far west. As I already stated, it's a pacific gopher snake.

Yall want to fight about it? :D

The resident expert Joezilla will settle this eventually ;)

Ok, to clear things up, I actually FEEL bad for killing the little guy. I have a huge respect for animals and won't kill anything unless I intend to eat it or if I thought it would cause me danger. In hind sight, which is always 20/20, I could have just picked it up.

To prove my manliness, here is a pic of me at my old job taking the snakes out of the tasting room and putting them back into the the vineyards.

and here is the little hunter (the big grey one):

I hate the word expert. If there any out there, I'm definitely not one of them. THere are plenty of USA snakes that I don't know yet. That looks to be a juvenile pacific gopher snake. Poor little guy. They tame up quick. For the record I didn't kill that copperhead that bit me either, but I sure stuck that syringe in it hard when we microchipped it :)

Thanks, Joe for clearing it up. Well, hell, you ARE an expert in my eyes, bro!

You and I feel the same about such things as killing stuff. If I get bit, it's most likely not the snake's fault so why kill it?

as for a triangular shaped head, thats more of a guideline. Plenty of watersnakes get accused of being copperheaded moccasins when they do a threat display

For the most part, the best thing to watch out for is a cat-eye. Most venemous snakes in the US (except for the Coral) have a cat's eye slit, where as most non-venomous do not.

Don't expect the same stuff in Peru though. There are NO rules out there that work here.

Wouldn't think of it, bro. There is so much stuff down there that no one knows. They are always finding new stuff. With all that said, your experience gives you some advantages. I'm interested in learning what I can from you.

Ditto! I'll try my best not to let ya'll down, but Peru and Insects/Reptiles are a cluster$^@&* of cool new and dangerous things. The hard part is how to bring my stump ripper down there. I can't wait to learn all of the information seething out of you and your instructors as well. Above all, I can't wait to see the real machete users and real people who are depending on knives and what they can get as a way of life down there. Those are the real experts to me!

so the triangle head can be found on some non-venomous snakes, but a round head definitely wont be on venomous snakes?

Yep! Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but you won't have to worry about Coral snakes or Cobras or Boomslangs in BC!
