What kind of Steel Heart for under 3 bills?

steelnut is so right about not telling the bette half what a knife costs, they do not understand period, the same as most other people. look at their facial expressions and other body language when you tell them that you spent 800. on a knife.

they have their hobbies and we have ours, we cannot help that we like class and quality!!!

All those ASH in steelnuts pic are fat knives, and will not be light. Even a skinny ASH, which only came coated, may be heavier than your M6 as it has a broad blade.

Someone ought to have weights on the M6 and the Skinny ASH.

Where do you live? There may be a Hog near you.

I live in North Jersey

According to some info I received in this other thread, the weights are close, but the M6 is almost an ounce heavier. Hardly a big difference... I get your point though. I'm not looking at lighter knives here. I guess its mainly the design of the ASH/Skinny I'm interested in. I've also been browsing HogCult.com which has specs on different Busse knives.

Adrock,

Good on you for taking the time to search sites like HogCult. Truth is, whatever Busse you buy will likely be the best fixed blade you own. Period.

So, find a design that meets your needs, then post up a WTB stating your preference in terms of coating/slab material, and one will come to you. Truthfully, there are a LOT of skinny ASHes out there. Some of them have probably been beaten really well, and may be in your price range. Matter of fact, with things the way they are, I'd say there's probably a good chance of you getting what you want.

The skinny ASH is probably the perfect knife for MOST users out there. If won't do a load of chopping, but it'll baton just fine, and since most people donn'y really NEED chopping power from an all-around camper type knife, there's reAlly no reason for you to go with the VERY fat CG version.

As for coating, just buy the most "well-loved" knife you can find (long as the edge is fine) and we'll teach ya how to strip/satinize it.

Anything for the King Adrock! BTW...I know this fly spot where they gots the champagne. ;)

Welcome to the trough, and good luck finding your knife. It won't be your last.

What he said. We like it when noobs actually try to do some of their own research.

ever think about just ordering a new tank buster on the Busse site, you get exactly what you want, with like a million options... There is no better way to get what you want then to custom order to get it your way...

Excellent advice. Thanks a lot man. ...As long as the beat is bumpin and the girlies are hot... I'm there.

I try... trust me. Whether I buy a new tooth pick, or a $300 knife, I agonize and probably spend way too much time reading everything I can. You gotta start somewhere.

I go to bed with NMSFNOSJTACASH1TBFBM....GTFO...LOL...PQZW...NINER swirling around in my head. Somehow I landed on ASH :D

I took a look at them and I agree it is a nice way to get a decent knife at a great price, but the look of that knife doesn't do it for me. And I'm ok with deciding somewhat based on looks, knowing these are all awesome knives.

Many of us are just like this, man. Many are the nights I've gone to bed thinking about a knife (or gadget, or flashlight, etc) and woken up a little obsessed. My first Busse obsession was the Saber SFNO. BEAUTIFUL knife, and you may actually want to look into it if you increase your budget a bit.

Adrock,
I think you're on the right track. I did my own tuneup on a Skinny ASH and ended up with this. After the pic I trimmed the butt, following the edge of the micarta and leaving only a rounded skull crusher w lanyard hole. Removed the rear talon hole.

Feels great!
Dave :D

Wow! I guess I am pretty close. I'm trying to fine tune my options/selection. Its going to feel so good when I finally pull the trigger on one of these bad boys.

you can find a beater/user for around $300 even though it's worth every penny of $500.

Sounds like you want a Sarsquatch, get a Sarsquatch. Trust me on this.;):D Its basically a SH, with a handle that is better suited for chopping, no pinky pinch. The zero edges Busse put on those things were really sharp, and they are easy to keep sharp... and they are cheap... and have an unfinished finish... run-on sentence over.:D

I don't know if it is possible to get a used cgASH1 for about $300 to be honest... or a NMSFNO. Could always try though.

a noe went for a 250$ buy it now recently, so it could happen.

I think it would be reasonable to say "you can't get a steel heart for less then 300$ reliably"

but add a 100$ to that and your good to go.

Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for a bargain to pop up. Of course, you have to haunt the forums and eBay to score.

The Sarsquatch is indeed a great suggestion, though I suspect you'll find the ASH more aesthetically appealing.

I highly reccomend a Steel Heart Ergo/SH-E.

Super classic Busse, and there are a few for sale on the exchange now.

In my opinion it is perhaps the best all around Busse ever. Extremely pared down, simple design. Just the right size for camp/combat chores as well as some chopping.
