What kind of Steel Heart for under 3 bills?

CG ASH1 all the way...

you can find a beater/user for around $300 even though it's worth every penny of $500.

I'm slightly confused about a CG knife. First I read combat grade meant it's finish wasn't that flashy or coated... now I'm getting that CG means the knife is thicker than a typical model?

It's possible.;)

What am I missing? Perhaps you have one to offer?

Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for a bargain to pop up. Of course, you have to haunt the forums and eBay to score.

Thats exactly what I'm prepared to do. Along with painfull research and hours of reading, I'm also the guy that will wait for just the right deal

The Sarsquatch is indeed a great suggestion, though I suspect you'll find the ASH more aesthetically appealing.

I do... Thanks to all for the insight. Please feel free to keep the thread going. Pictures, suggestions... offers? :) whatever. I will post in the WTB section at some point too.

You could get a nice Steel Heart with a couple of these bills: :D

The "Standard" ASH is the CG, but the company store also sold a run of "Skinny" ASHs. Additionally, there was a run of "fat" ASHs that I think were only sold at shows and 'ganzas (I suppose the skinny and fat models were too good a pun to pass up). I prefer skinnies -- I think the lighter blade makes for a better all-around knife. If you're planning to use it as a chopper, then you'll probably be better served with a standard CG, or you might even want to go fat. I don't care for how the heavier blades balance with a straight ASH handle, but a lot of folks like them just fine. My suggestion if you want a chopper is to move up in size (and price) to the FSH or look at the NMSFNO.

No. Generally speaking, CG models are coated to keep the cost down. In fact, when CG and LE versions are offered, the LE are usually thicker.

Someone near Jersey needs to help out this piglet and introduce him to some Busse knives. If you get near Cleveland, I've got a few. No ASH though, didn't like 'em.

What I was eluding too was that I have seen several Skinny Ash's for around $300.00, give or take. Even some plain Jane CG fat Ash's hover in the $300.00 range, it's a buyers market right now, keep your eyes peeled.

mine was a CG ASH1 (at .32 thick) that I originally paid and extra $80 for the DC finish.

I'll amend my statement by saying that I've seen more than a few ASHs, both skinny and thick, for less than $400... some closer to $300 than others. Be patient if it's a SH you want. and while the Sarsquatch looks kinda goofy, I bet they're great all-arounders.

One thing nice about Busse's is the fact that there is a model out there for just about anyone's likes/dislikes!

I've fallen hard for the SteelHearts and the Skinny Ash1 is near the top of my list as well. For a good all around camp type knife, the Skinny ASH1 is gonna be hard to beat... and you can beat it hard too! Can we say that here?

Ahahaha! You just did. Haha. Yeah i'm really leaning towards the Skinny being that my M6 is already all the thick, tough, heavy chopper i'll need. Besides, I'm sure it won't be my last.

Just thought I'd throw it out there that I did post a WTB thread. All offers are welcome (for an ASH)

I was in the same boat a little while ago and chose the Skinny ASH - it is a perfect all around knife for me - slices and chops well enough and I had it on my belt for 5+ hours hiking again this weekend and didn't even notice it. In hindsight, very glad I did not go for the combat grade for my uses.

Posting in the exchange worked well for me - picked up a very lightly used one in the colors I wanted, with kydex, for just over $300 total.

Good luck!
