What Knife Did Your Dad, Or Grandpa Carry?

My grandfather carried a Schrade old timer 30t and an Uncle Henry, both of which I have now since he passed away 10 years ago. I hope to pass them on to my son. My dad isn't a knife guy so he doesn't carry one but I'm working on it. But my step dad wanted a Byrd cara cara 2 so I got him one and he carries that.

I barely remember my grandfather; both are long dead. Last one died when I was probably 7 years old and the other died before I was born. My Dad carrried a small Schrade folder or a Case. He wore his knives out quickly as he used a grinding wheel to sharpen them in many cases. Dad is now dead as are all of my grandparents and parents. My Dad was always interested in knives and was interested in what I might be carrying regularly. He was not thrilled when I switched to a SAK in the mid 1980's. He felt they were toys. He liked Case and Schrade knives. He was not into fixed blades at all. He had a couple, but they seldom got used. We used a large fixed blade to chop corn stalks down to feed our cattle. A machete woud have worked better. The family was very frugal. We raised much of our own food. What knives us "kids" had were bought by us. Bought a Case Barlow when I was 9 or 10, and it cost about $20-22 at the local hardware store. That was a huge amount of money to me and probably took me close to a year to save up. As I recall now, the money probably came from skinning muskrats, raccoons, and mink for $0.10 each or trapping and selling a few muskrat pelts.

The world has changed and now I drop $100 just to try out a knife and if I don't like it much, throw it in a box to never see the light of day again.

Dad carried a Buck 701 that was in his pocket the day he passed on. This one:

My dad was in hardcore ESAR (search and rescue) and he carried a buck 119 that he beat the hell out of. I found it in the garage the other day and the leather sheath was absolutely ruined and the tip was totally rounded off. There was no edge to it at all. I sharpened it up and refurbished the tip for him and he was pretty happy. I compared it to my new (but very used) Buck 119 and almost nothing has changed in how they were made.

Paternal grandfather carried a bone-handled, two-blade jack with carbon steel. VERY sharp. In my eyes, that knife was magical.

Maternal grandfather lost an arm in WWII and, as such, didn't carry a folder. He did have a few fixed blades around and kept one in his car for picnics during our road trips.

Dad is a dedicated Victorinox Classic guy. It's the only knife he owns, or wants.

Grandpa carried a Jacques seed co knife that he got from work he still has quite a few of them I would love to get his knife someday

Dad carries a Swiss Army knife on and off

My dad carried old timers and uncle henrys, and a buck 110, I have them put up in my safe as my dad is past away now, My grandfather has carried the same old case knife since I can remember, It's an old old stockman, one of the blades is broken where he uses it for a screwdriver, I have offered about 100 times to buy him a new case knife , and he always tells me "no, This one is fine" I dunno how long he's had it but he won't even let me hold the thing, and i know It's been in his pocket for as long as I can remember.

Grandfather: small US made ss lockback. black handles, unbranded as far as I could ever tell.

Father: Schrade 77OT. He collects the old US made ones from eBay.

When he does carry a knife, which isn't very often, Dad carries a Wenger SI that I gave him a few years ago. His father never really carried a knife but always had a letter opener near his chair. I was very young when my maternal grandfather passed and recently found a relatively worn case small stockman that could have been his but mom isn't 100% sure it was his or just something he had in his house.

I don't remember my Grandfather ever carrying a knife. I was 13 when he died.
My Dad carried a double lockblade Browning. He bought it in the early 80's. I've never seen another double lockblade other than the 1 he had.

Cool thread. My Dad carried a yellow handled Italian Stiletto, OTF he picked up in Italy during WWII. I remember it well as when I was a child, I accidentally deployed it and when he got home...

Never knew my Dad to carry a knife, but he did give me the 'kangaroo' set he bought with money saved up from collecting cans for recycling while he was with the Boy Scouts in England. The blade stamp reads 'Sheffield England' on one side and 'William Rodgers' on the other.

My father (like most dad's) carried a buck 110. He carried it everyday in a leather pouch on his belt. The knife saw everything, rope, twine, box's, deer. He still has it, but now he carries the Spyderco Native I got him. He likes the smaller size, and he really likes back locks.

My father passed away 2 years ago, I have his knives as well as knives from my paternal and maternal grandfathers. Pictured below from left to right are my father's Boker Stockman, maternal grandfather's Queen Congress and paternal grandfather's Boker Barlow all with original patina and stains.
