What knife does Bear Grylls use?

Not a big deal, but ... casual insults in response to an honest question aren't really funny. Not everyone is an expert on everything. That's why we have these forums, so people can come and ask questions, and not be derided for it. I certainly don't think abiggs was out of line, joking about it, but we don't have to rub it in.

I was just messing around. I didn't mean anything by it. My bad...

No, no, I realize you were only kidding, that was OK, I just didn't want anyone else pushing it past a joke.

I'm still trying to work out why anyone would be interested in what knife he (Grylls) uses other than to actively avoid buying one of them by mistake ;)

All time classic quote from him... "My knife is pretty blunt because I haven't used it in a while"

Now, I ask you, How many of us own knives that go blunt whilst resting in their sheaths ? Either that's what happened to his (dearly overpriced) knife, or the fool put it away blunt and didn't check it before leaving on his next trip.
Not the sort of guy I'd be wanting to take purchasing advice from !

He only uses a rubber one, cause he doesn't do anything real. He is not REALLY surviving in the wilderness, so he doesn't use a REAL knife.

He doesn't use a knife. All of the things he has to cut is pre-fabricated by the producers so he won't look bad on the spot.:P

I wonder if he gets more respect on a shoelace forum. He seems to use his shoelaces far more often than he does a knife.

Most times, a good length of real paracord, with some knot and snare knowledge would probably be of more worth for a short time "survival situation" than a knife. But I suppose mentioning such might be a bet heretical on a knife forum. :D

Ok maybe "hahahahaha" was a little to much, I really meant just "hah". I just thought abiggs comment was funny.

So stainz i apologize if I offended you, I didn't intend to.

;)

Suppose you take your cord and make a snare without using a knife (pre-cut cord?) and suppose you catch a rabbit. Now what are you going to do with it? Eat it like corn on the cob?

If you have a knife you can make cordage. It's easy.

suppose you catch a rabbit.

"Bear" doesn't require cordage to catch a wabbit. He uses a big stick.

Just keepin' it real here, but I must admit to purchasing a cheapy Gerber Gator after seeing "Bear" use one on the show.

right on

I don't watch TV. I have never seen him in action. But from what I've read here, he endorses the Bayley knife, he doesn't actually use it on the show.

I caught the Jungle episode the other night, and he does use it.

I may get it for this, but here goes. The Bayley knives really are not all the bad looking. Bear's (of whom I'm not a fan) knife is based off the "Raven" series here: http://www.bayleyknife.com/raven.htm

I took a look at the steel info, I found this link: http://michaelwest.dk/knive/rwl34-datasheet.pdf

The materials used (RWL steel and micarta) are high quality IMO. However that fact that Bear has his name all over the knife, and the fact that they are made overseas makes the knives ridiculously over priced. Even if the Raven series appeals to me a little, the hype (and price) surrounding the knife makes it hard to like.

I wouldn't use any knife that was endorsed by a fraud.

This has been well hashed out in other threads, but I never regarded him as a fraud. I knew from day one that I was watching a tv show created for the purpose of attracting viewers and generating revenue for the Discovery Channel. Sorta like when when I watched "24" and knew that Kiefer Sutherland didn't really have a nuclear bomb in his backpack. Even though Keifer's character never issued a disclaimer telling the viewer it was just fictional.

Like I said. Take the hype away, and discount the knife by about $200.00 USD, and it's not a bad knife.

Raven series.

It is a beautiful knife anyway. Most of the high price is because of it being from an EU country.

Anyone who eats bugs and live frogs to keep me entertained deserves a few nights in a hotel. I watched the everglades eps the other day and he used a Buck Vanguard with guthook(I hate guthooks) but he looked like he knew what he was doing. I learned some useful and interesting things other than celebs sex lives.

That's the knife I saw on the Sahara episode. Finally, someone knew what knife he used. Thanks for this info. I think that knife looks good, but for over $400, it is pricey.
