What knife did my mum carry? None that I am aware of. Not even when camping, or on a big game hunt out of state with her second hubby.
(I believe he had a Western "Black Beauty" F66 when afield. I'm not sure what - if anything - was in his pocket when he was working/at home.)
My (maternal) grand mother had a Old Hickory or Russell Green River 3.5 inch clip point paring knife on her most days. (she was a cook at several restaurants/cafe's and truck stops, from the 1950's (maybe earlier) till she passed in 1999.
(I'm told she opened her own café in 1994, and worked it until her last day.)
My (maternal) great grand mother carried a 7 inch (?) (might have been a 10 inch), Old Hickory (I remember the "forging" marks on the blade) butcher knife in a home made canvas or burlap sheath under her apron. (yes, she did have a strip of leather sewn in on the edge side, so as not to cut the thread.)
My (maternal) great-great grandmother carried a 12 or 14 inch Old Hickory butcher knife in a leather sheath that maternal great-great grandfather (her hubby) made for her (or maybe it was her daddy?) under her apron. I think she may have kept a Old Hickory or Russell Green River 3.5 inch paring knife in her purse, along with her (loaded) nickel plated Iver Johnson .38 S&W break-top revolver that Great-Great Grandpa (her hubby) gave her from their store's inventory for a wedding present, roughly 30 ~ 40 years before I arrived, as well.
I never met her mum, or grand mum, so I don't know what (if anything) they carried. Taking into consideration at least one of them was of the Blackfoot(?) tribe, and both hunted, I'm pretty sure they carried a knife of some sort.
I don't remember my paternal grand mother, or great grand mother (the only ones still here when I arrived. I think I was 8 or 9 when paternal great grandmother passed. I was 17 or 18 when paternal grandmother passed.) carrying a knife outside the kitchen or garden.
