What knife is best for self defense?

Andy what prison did you see that at?

A FREAKING BIG BASTAGE....... or to quote another great Aussie "That's not a knife"... ;)

Now I have personally seen people killed with all manner of sharpened objects/tools. One of the quickest deaths was with a TOOTH BRUSH but it was a lucky hit on a femoral artery. Industrial textile shears were pretty spectacular though...

There is no quick end in a knife fight, one has to keep cutting/stabbing till the opposition is completely incapacitated or they are liable to stick you back...!!

ST Ripper or BATAC
For those who say it doesn't happen, try living on the street sometime. Of course at that point, a Busse isn't really a financial option.

To quote Gunnery Sgt. Hartman:

"Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills."

So it is with a knife. The late Col. Jeff Cooper called it a proper mindset. As has been said here, the best tool is a rifle. Then a shotgun. Then a handgun. However, if it comes down to a knife, you'd better have more than just a monstrous, kick ass slab of INFI. Justin Beiber armed with a FFFBM is still at one hell of a disadvantage going up against Former Seal Richard Marcinko using a Game Warden, of for that matter, his bare hands.

The next question is which one are you likely to have when you need it? Neither my FFFBM nor my AK47 are very likely to be with me when I'm at the grocery store, but my Active Duty rides horizontally on my belt damned near every day. (Of course, it's not likely to be used if I ever need to defend myself, the .45 Auto in the small of my back will.) In the firearms discussions I've had, the sentiment is the .25 Auto in your pocket is more effective than t he .44 Magnum on your night stand.

It comes down to what will you have when you need it, and will you have the TRAINING and MINDSET to use it properly when needed?

Just looking for some opinions on what knife would be the best for self defense. Something concealable and can cause major damage if the situation arises.
I had a great time talking about this subject with a few guys at the Dayton show. I also think that I have a new knife that I need to buy.;)

I would have to go with the Sus Scrofa. First of all the handle for me is perfectly designed. Second, it is a pointy SOB. Last, the re curve blade would draw whatever was being cut into the heart of the cutting surface. What do you guys think and why.

Define concealable as it applies to you...some folks can conceal an FBM. ;) ...And are we talking last tier defense?

This little sucker has only one use...

...But it is rather small.

Not as small as this Shivworks/Trace Rinaldi Lil Loco, however... With influence from the little OSS knives, this little blade was created to be a last ditch SD weapon and can be completely concealed in the collar of even a golf shirt. It will slice the heck out of any soft tissue you apply it to.

It's also good as a low profile package & mail opener, and it rides on my keychain most of the time...hard for others around you to be scared of something they can barely see. :D

Speaking of Sus Scrofas, I hope to find one of those SS variants that are a bit more pointy at a show someday. I think Trevor's got one, and it is a mean blade.

I usually carry a fairly heavy large folder, currently a Lionsteel SR1, in my left pocket for self defense, mostly so the weight can somewhat counterbalance the Kimber Solo in my right pocket.:D

Seriously, if I were in an environment where my only SD option was to carry a knife on a daily basis, it would probably be my Busse Public Defender. After all, that's what it was designed for. But realistically, as a 65 year old old fart, I am not gonna be getting in any slug-fests or knife fights. That's what the Solo is for.

In terms of SD, I've yet to see a knife as effective as a kerambit for damage dealing. However you do need some training to use it.

This is simply a last defense senario. I always have a knife on me. I don't alway carry my XD 40.

I have recently got to really see and handle a sus scrofa.....weight,balance,blade and grip make it a superb edc carry for me , and thanks to the super Lexi and Josh, i will soon have one in my hands. so if I do , by some circumstance, happen to have to go to blade, I would feel very comfortable with this knife.

I personally find the Nuclear Sea Horse terrifying. Any sane attacker would turn around and run when you present it to him.

Anytime brother, glad I could help.

If you are looking to fight with a knife then you will lose and get arrested.

A knife that is UTILITARIAN and you are willing to carry with you about everywhere, then can become your knife to go to in an incident in the absence of other weapons. Myself, I consider my brain the number one weapon and anything I pick up then becomes an extension of my brain. Pencil, piece of paper, rock, brick, garbage can lid, book, these all become weapons.

UTILITARIAN

UTILITARIAN

There. I think that point was made. Sturdy, well made knife that fits your hand well and either is a solid lock up or a good small sheath knife. Best advice for you is to not be around and get away before you get to the point you need to pull that knife out (gun either).

Although the answers are informative, I feel I must point out that it had better be a folder because you live in Ohio. If you ever get caught with it, or need to use it for that matter it will appear that you are looking for a fight because concealed fixed blades are as a rule illegal in Ohio. Your CCW does not transfer to knives in our wonderful state. If an officer wanted to push it in some jourisdictions, having a one hand opening folder totally concealed in your pocket could be construed as a concealed weapon. I have not found case law on the folder part but that was the opinion of our prosecutor. I don't like it but thats what i understand. FYI buddy. Sometimes being around BLADE in Atlanta makes you forget about your home state laws. I can't believe all the exposed and semi concealed steel in that place.
