What knife / knives do you not "get"?

off the top of my head:
I don't get knives with recurve blades, especially those with a lot of recurve and a lot of belly.
I don't get bushcraft knives, those that only have a shallow grind near the bottom of the blade. I like the grind to come up most of the width of the blade.
I don't get custom knives with hammered flats. One of the best things about a custom knife is the beautiful grind work that takes a skilled craftsman. Anybody can beat up the side of the blade blank and leave it that way.

I don't get Cold Steel products. I guess that's because I don't plan on beating anybody with a club or a shovel. Their knives are over designed and weird looking as well. I don't have enough disposable income to waste on some monstrosity either.

Cold Steel covers a broad spectrum of products for a variety of people - I imagine their focus on "tactical" knives primarily comes from looking at what products sold. Even still, some of their more recent offerings are dramatic departures from their general stock - look at the "Lucky" and the "Finn Wolf." Also, the Tuff Lite is probably the best utility folder I have ever handled. Super ergonomic, affordable, easy to maintain, and a lock that won't fail you ever.

Many of their products are particularly silly or clearly designed for totally killing dudes. All the same, I'm still looking to get a Large Espada... I'll rarely - if ever - carry it, but I've loved the design for years and am going to have my first "display" knife pretty soon if I can scrape together the cash.

I think Cold Steel offers good products at good prices - I just hope they branch out into more... Reasonable offerings in the future.

I have trouble getting behind anything that could be considered "badass."

Todd Begg Knives.
I'm flabbergasted when see what is basically a production knife selling retail for over $1000. I mean Brad Southard and Jon Graham are at least doing some work on their production models and they charge $400-$500. Does Todd Begg even breathe on those $1400 Bodegas that are leaving his shop?
No offense to the man, and if people are willing to pay it, more power to you.
I personally just don't get it.

See thread: TactiLOL knives.

But most of all, this one:

Super fancy dress customs that are $3k plus (with mokuti, timascus, mother of pearl, damascus, etc). I prefer a more plain and industrial look, even in my custom knives that are 1k plus.

Esse izula. I admit I've never had one but that's a very small and very thick knife. Too thick for edc unless they deep hollow ground it. Of course I could be wrong and they're under .020 behind the edge. And they couldn't be bothered to finish it and put a handle on it

The two brands that come immediately to mind in the 'I don''t get it' department are Sebenzas and most Spydercos. With the Sebenzas, it's basically 'everything.' With the Spydercos, it's mostly the look of most of them, especially when open, and that big hole. In their case there ARE a few of exceptions to this--3 or 4 models I might like. I know Spydercos and Sebenzas are good knives though.

Regarding Cold Steel, IMO they are probably the one brand with the broadest spectrum of "nice >> ugly." The Cold Steels I own I purchased because I like the look, utility and quality of them. However as you go down their line there are those which, to me, are either non-appealing or just plain ugly. At one time I bought into 'the whole line and brand is just cheaply constructed, weirdo crap' crap. Now that I own a few I realize how wrong I was.

As far as Emersons are concerned I liken them to Harley-Davidsons. Lovers and haters, little in between. Me not being a carrot-slicer, it's the old, "If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand" thing. I respect the opinions of the honestly-held detractors however. No knife is for everyone. It's only those who have never owned one for any length of time yet denigrate them continuously that I am a bit suspect of. For Emerson bashers who want to talk about price:

Quality knives can be expensive, a relative term. How a Sebenza is worth two or more Emersons is the biggest mystery of all to me. In that case it's ME who doesn't understand.

From a more aesthetic point of view, I don't get damascus steel. I like a very clean, minimal look and damascus almost always seems obnoxiously busy to me. I really don't understand the appeal it holds to some.

The whole overbuilt, over priced flipper craze. I just don't get it. They take a style of knife and embellish it to ridiculous standards and charge outrageous sums of money for what is no matter how nice of one, an overbuilt frame/liner lock knife.

What really bothers me then is all the justification for things like lock rock and pre mature lockup etc...

I am not judging. I love cheap Moras and Victorinox knives. Some would say that I do not qualify as a true knife enthusiasts. I would disagree, but would not judge them for having that opinion.

Truth be told my dream knife is a Fallkniven F1, but I am too cheap to buy one when I have perfectly good Mora Bushcraft at the house.

A lot of the fancy inlays and mokuti gems and other things that don't really add to the tools purpose. I can see for "full dress" knives but not on one's which were first designed to be cutting tools. I don't get it. I like the more plain look.

Sebeneza! Every time I see one I think " for a dude with lotiony hands and a manicure!" I love tactical stuff and knives that are made for killing are attractive to me! And as far as folders go, I think benchmade has a secret portal to my soul! Love their knives! I have one spyderco and like it!

The overbuilt knives generally don't appeal to me. My first ZT was the 0770CF and I love it. But I wouldn't call it overbuilt at all.

It took me a while to even consider buying a Mora. I still don't care for them FOR ME. But they are sharp, pretty well made, and work if you want them to work.

The F1..... oh yeah. I drolled over the ones that Bark River put handles on and some of the original Fallkniven micarta handles. I would look at them in a catalog/on line..... I want one of those. Then I looked at the price and backed off. Finally I was visiting a knife shop in VA. I was in the area and bypassed off the interstate to their store. I looked at the F1 of my dreams.... It was something like $286 +tax. I him hawed around. Then I bought it and walked out of the store. At the time, it was my most expensive factory knife. I still like it, but the price still bothers me. My suggestion is get the F1 and fulfill your dreams. Then move on to the next dream. SAKs are great and I use the hell out of them, but they are not what dreams are made of for adults.

Same here though I do appreciate the skill required to forge it. The look...not so much. "Too busy" is how I describe it too.
