What knife would you buy if only it was Magna Cut?

Most of my knives that I trust I would buy again. But I would buy a PM/PM2 for sure. Maybe a Bugout or Griptilian too but those are all available in some premium steels.

Just kidding.

Seriously though, we don't know much about Magnacut in practice yet. When iOS 16 will come out, will you install 16.0 or wait for the first patch ?

For example, M390 Spyderco vs. Hinderer vs. ZT are all different, significantly so. Will not buy an expensive Magnacut knife without some experience of the community first.

I remember New Coke. 😂

Rat 2. Likely 90% of my day to day cutting needs could be covered with that. I have no idea how expensive that steel would be for manufacturers to buy and process.

What information on the steel do you think is missing to make a decision about the steel? Seems a lot of manufacturers have jumped on or will be on the magna wagon soon. There is enough information out there for me to make my decision on the steel. Yes, there will be the “What Rockwell” variable, but it is safe to say that any reputable manufacturer will do a decent heat treat and will probably vary the hardness based on the intended purposes of a knife or find the Goldilocks zone. I want to see large hard use fixed blades in this steel for sure.

From what I have read, it will probably be in the S30V range of materials cost. It is reported to be relatively easy to grind too which makes it cost efficient to produce.

Not disagreeing with you.

To be honest, I'm still not sure if I "need" it .... CPM Cruwear, 3V, Infi and AEB-L are still tougher, M390 is still more corrosion resistant. Toughness/wear resistance of Magnacut are right in between. Would be cool to try a Magnacut Manix 2 for $120, but (for now) to put all bets on it to buy a more expensive knife - it's just too early, I feel.

If you added LC200N to the list of your steels we would have been instant best friends lol

I like MagnaCut very much. But I also have an affinity for the ultra high toughness steels. Most knives that would likely be made in MagnaCut can surely handle the types of use a knife is meant to do. But I still like a little overkill in the strength and toughness of my knife steel, especially since my affinity for toughness is entwined with my affinity for thin grinds and ease of sharpening. MagnaCut knives handled these characteristics just fine in the small run of them I made so far. But I don't know if they have the overkill factor at that thinness. But not everyone needs it, and I am sure most people don't. But I like it, and in the end, all my shop knives that do the best end up being high toughness like 15N20, AEB-L or LC200N.

And my answer to the question in the OP, if I had the money and it were available, the Spyderco Resilience, preferably with FRN scales, perhaps the blue from S35VN.
