What knife would you choose in an emergency situation?

You see variations on this theme in these forums quite frequently. Most of the time they end up getting downright silly, or start out that way. Invariably a key point gets lost. By definition, you can't schedule emergencies. You don't choose a knife in an emergency. You will deal with an emergency with whatever you have at hand at the time!

The much more important question then is what knives do you routinely choose to have at hand in different daily circumstances? To me, "at hand" means on your person or sometimes in your vehicle. The only kind of emergency that I know of where you perhaps can choose your knife after the fact is at home, and time constraints may make that impossible also.

Therefore, this is why I always have a large Busse in my vehicles. It is also why I carry the folder that in my opinion is the closest thing to a fixed blade that I have personally found, a LionSteel SR1, since Jerry doesn't offer a folder. This is why I always have at least two folders on me, the smaller being invariably a Spyderco Native, which will probably be replaced with an SR2 in time.

This is why I also find the "why carry a big folder" threads silly. Who would ever, ever, choose a smaller, more delicate knife in a true emergency? I will always have on me the largest knife I can reasonably carry in any given circumstance, because you can't call "time out" and go home to select your tools.

Always have a folder in the pocket, Scrapivore and 511 hanging out in the backpack just in case

In the city of Philadelphia it is Illegal to carry any fixed blade or folder, any size, open or concealed, even a leatherman tool could be considered illegal in the city limits without a weapons permit....I have read so many different things regarding this....Finally I called the sheriffs department and asked. I live smack in the middle of the city.....SUCKS

And when i leave the city Im normally headed to the woods.... At that point I have plenty of gear.

First thing on my belt, last thing unloaded when I return home......

I tweaked the kit to my liking, took out the whistle and pencil and a few small things i dont remember lmao and added more fishing tackle, more snare wire, another firesteel, magnesium toggle, another arrowhead ect. everything is pretty self explanatory.. except that little thing just right of the arrowhead, that is a sharks tooth. There is one/few in all my bags and gear. They work as a ferro rod striker pretty great, but they get brittle after a while. mostly i like them, think they are cool, so i keep one everywhere!

Im buying land in florida, where i am originally from, once its paid off im moving back. There is no law against open carry of fixed blades there. I remember as a teenager i carried a hunting bowie on my side right in walmart and everything with no issues!!! I called the sheriffs department in that town and was told its fine to open carry any sized fixed blade.... There I think I will EDC the chopweiler. Its just the perfect size and weight. Not too big to be in my way, but big enough for EVERYTHING.

For intrusion/extraction/rescue in a car wreck or burning building scenario, my go-to emergency tool would be a big, thick slab of INFI, so I always carry an NMFBM or FFBM in my vehicle--usually a B-11 as well. And if I get stuck in the "outback" it's a welcome aid to gathering traction material to get me un-stuck or to chop brush/wood for a signal/survival fire and to build a shelter.

Protech/Emerson CQC-7 in my pocket, Strider DB-L on my belt (hopefully being replaced with a AMS Mil overrun), and TGLB in my BOB in the truck.

Cupidganzaaaa sar 3 horizontal belt center
scalpel-like kershaw leek in pocket
tglb within easy reach in the car
gerber multi-tool in the boot

I sho nuff loves me some cupid style sar3!!!

Rat Trap is always in my pocket and the vehicles are all equipped with Basic 11s. If I have time to plan I always take a NMSFNO with me.

Funny enough but California is fairly sane on this and has really no state-wide restrictions.

If I could choose any blade and could only have one for some reason, I'd want a TTKZ since Kukris let you use them as an axe or machete or even finer work. I'd prefer to have an ABA or AMS for that but think I'd have most of the bases covered.

I do a lot of urban hiking when I am staying at our Miami Condo. Some of my treks take me through 'less than desirable' locations. Of course, I am NOT looking for any problems, but to get from Point A to Point B on foot, you have to cross some lines.
I have really come to appreciate the little Mean Street knife. Dwayne at Armoralleather made me a cross draw horizontal sheath for it. I carry that, and the little Springfield XDS .45 under a shirt worn untucked. They both just disappear, but are available instantly if there were an emergency.
