What knife would you use?

Reflecting on my earlier post I realized that might be today's choices. However, when I lived in Alaska, and for years after I left, a SAK Swiss Champ rode on my hip in a leather sheath. I used it for all kinds of things. When I was making some walking sticks a few years back it was the knife I found worked best for me.

That SAK SC was my constant companion in garrison or in the field, going fishing, hunting, or camping. I guess if I was hitting the outdoors again I'd have to really consider calling that one back to active duty. Then, it would be the knife I'd pull out to make big sticks into small ones.

Well it would have to be my Spyderco Native because that is what I carry. However I am picking up another Vic Super Tinker soon to carry as a pocket knife. I would love to pull out a Bowie though. :)

Just curious, Amos Iron Wolf - what knives were popular with other folks up there. I read once that Leatherman and other multis have become pretty much ubiquitous in Alaska, that you'll find one on just about every belt. True?

MN, I left in 93. Multis were just getting started. I'd picked up a SOG multi because it had bigger pliers than my SAK and wire cutters within the pliers. I also pinched the meat on my finger many times using those pliers. Especially when they would slip.

Given the nature of fellows up there however, I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear everyone including infants packed multi-tools of some sort. Just to darn handy in that environment. Plenty of folks up there who camp, fish, hunt, boat in everything from canoes to jet boats. Besides the various jobs people are doing, all that fun gear needs a tweak for a fix now and then.

Wish I could tell you more, but time has passed a bit since I left.

You will probably still find a variety of knives still being packed on a belt or in a pocket along with a multi I am sure.

I'd sure like to go back, but it might be a sad thing as I've heard a lot of things have changed since I left. I also remember a fellow who was there before the pipeline came and he was adamant that he wished the pipeline had never come. It cut through his place if I recall. He said it brought too many people and too much bother. He liked things better they way they'd been. He was probably right.

I can't recall the author's name, but there is a book called, "My Lost Wilderness." A good picture of life there before the forest were heavily timbered around Admiralty Island and those areas. My favorite is about Sockless Joe. Talk about a minimalist. :D

In the situation that jackknife laid out for us, I would certainly have multiple knives on my person for such a wonderful trip. At least two, one fixed blade on the belt and one pocket knife, lately its been an old 24 year old Case Mini-Trapper in amber-brown bone. However, my all time favorite pocketknife pattern for the whittling arts is a Stockman. Its what I cut my teeth on growing up and it is the pattern I still have the most of currently in my accumulation. Perhaps my favorite is this old four blade..

Sunnyd,
That is one sweet looking knife.

What would I have in my pocket? one of my own.;)

Thanks there Cuz for the positive comments. Its a 1940-64 Case XX with old carbon steel and jigged green bone scales that are seriously worn down from edc pocket time starting back in the middle of the last century. The long since discontinued pattern is # 64047P. I find the leather punch very useful for hollowing out detailing techniques.

In that situation, I would have at my disposal, either a med. Case stockman, or Queen 2 bladed Congress, or a Vic Farmer in one front pocket, and a Spyderco Caly 3 clipped to the other. I don't know which pocket I would choose. Probably both!

Whatever's in there at the time. ;) Right now it's a CRKT M16-01K. Tactitool I know, but it's a one handed opening beater for my current work.
Probably wouldn't whittle to save it's life! :D
