What knives are good gift knives?

Depends on the person and what it will be used for. SAKs are always good, especially to non-knive people. I've given some of those. Got a Pacific Salt for a buddy when he boat a boat. Gave a Griptilian once as well.

Depends on way too many factors to answer for me, I like to put some thought into gifts.

You can get the excellent ZT0450 for $140 ish if you look around, and that is a whole lot of quality knife for that money.

The Kershaw Link in Aluminum is a $40 knife that acts like a $90 knife, in my opinion. You can't beat a quality knife made in the USA for that money.

I have gifted Victorinox Spartans, Case, Spyderco PM2s, Benchmades, Kershaws, ZTs, Bucks, JK Handmade Knives (also a great gift).

Knives make a great gift, and if you give a quality knife the recipient can expect to use and enjoy the knife for a good long time.

I gave a Kershaw Zing to a friend who used to carry a "jarbenza", that was a few years ago and the man still has that Zing.

Most of the group of people around me would appreciate traditional style GEC, Case or Rough Riders.

It truly depends upon the person and what size knife you think they would carry. For my friends that are not as appreciative of knives I have given Kershaw Links, Scallions and Leeks. For those into knives it has been anywhere from a Benchmade Grip to a ZT0909 to Hinderer XM-18. This also depends on the friendship level!

Saks, or opinels depending on the person. I think it depends more on them than anything else. hobbies, aesthetic, that sort of thing. Most of the knives I've gifted have been ones I've had in the collection already and passed along, got a few that I've re-gifted to a more loving home as well.

I gave my daughter a sprint run Tenacious. I gave her boyfriend a Kershaw Skyline. Of course she has gifted herself a few others from my collection, most recently an Endura and Delica.

As a rule? Kitchen knives. Tojiro DP is good and inexpensive. In my experience most people have never used a really good kitchen knife and it makes a world of difference.

When I gift a folder to a non-knife person they're generally grateful and might bring it up once or twice, but it's largely forgotten. When I gift a kitchen knife people usually RAVE about the thing every time they see me for a month or so.

Nobody will ever turn down a sak classic or a leatherman micra, so their pretty much perfect gifts for anyone.

Good point there Insipid, it is where the average person uses knives the most. As an additional thought, if they prefer a certain style of cooking, a knife that fits it would really be a treat. A good paring knife is often over-looked, as is a good cutting board.

Anzas are pretty neato gifts for the price, since they are all obviously handmade from files.

The problem with gift knives is that what seems "classic" to one person is hopeless dated to another, and some modern knives look too tactical.

So I would agree with SAKs. I like Anzas because they don't look old or knew, but features wood handles and leather sheaths.

Not sure the location but there is a website that sells the most unique, hand carved/decorated Opinels. Reasonably priced too. Pretty amazing stuff. Might find it on Goog, but I'm PRETTY sure the Opinel website links to it somewhere. Everyone should see these at some point.

If I find the link I'll return and post it here.

Yup. My sister LOVES to cook and her cutlery was absolute crap. So my last 4 gifts to her were a Richmond Artifex santoku in AEB-L, a North Arm Knives Trillium paring knife in S35VN, a Tojiro DP gyuto in VG10 and a Spyderco Sharpmaker to maintain them. After the first gift (the Artifex) she texted me and the following conversation ensued.
SIS: There's a problem with the knife you gave me.
ME: Crap, what is it? *quickly looking up warranty policy and feeling crushed*
SIS: It makes all my other knives suck!
