What knives are illegal in the US?

Never mind looking up Missouri laws. Because I just did and no not everyone was wrong about what everyone said about carrying a switch blade. Missouri law was changed in 2021. You can carry a switchblades no longer than 3 inches. But we also carry a fixed blade any length concealed.

It is my opinion that knife laws are stupid, especially when I can/do carry a gun.

Thankfully I live in a state where once you get your permit to carry a yeety boi you can pretty much carry around any bladed object you want. Sometimes I carry around a sword cane that looks identical to my walking cane, just because I can.

One thing I haven't skim read here, is that city laws are a thing.

Automatics are illegal to carry in North Carolina. Just as you can own a butterfly knife but it's illegal to carry one. Yet I can go shopping at Ingle's or Wal-Mart and open carry any kind of dagger on my belt and it's 100% legal.
You can’t carry them concealed, but you can carry them openly. That map was inaccurate if it was referring to sale or mere possession.

knife-law-knifeup
it's wrong about Maine, too. Significantly so.

Are switchblades, balisongs, and butterfly knives are illegal to carry in USA? Dirks, metal knuckles, daggers, and similar blades are illegal. Is it true & why?
Three pages into this thread, you must have gotten that each State here in the USA has its own laws regarding knives.

Where I live here in Texas, you may carry about any knife about anywhere. This includes switch blades and assisted opening knives, "flipper" opening knives, and any blade shape including double edged "dagger" profiles. There may be an upper length limit, but its a long one.

My own EDC is a Leatherman Wave.

5.5" depending on location. No Busse Hellrazor at companies that manufacture alcoholic beverages, for instance :)

I can't think of anywhere that permits one to carry a 'ballistic knife', even Texas. That's the only one I suspect is universally agreed on by lawbooks.

The lovechild of a dagger and a speargun? 😸

Butterfly knives banned in Texas. Really?

Not being contentious, just asking for confirmation.

Oh my god!! So many ridiculous laws that vary every 20 feet ya go! Need a 5 volume set of books to cover every different stupid law.

Actually in Texas there is no general length restrictions. One can carry a sword if one wishes.

The only length limitation is for "location restricted knives".

One may NOT carry a knife with a blade length greater than 5-1/2" in a location where it is illegal to carry a handgun.

As far as not being able to carry a Hellrazor at a brewery or at a winery or a distillery, that would be a business decision by the business in question. Texas state law makes no mention of alcohol manufactories and carrying knives.

I was just quoting https://www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/texas/. Restricted locations include:

:
(1) ... the premises of a business that has a permit or license issued under Chapter 25, 28, 32, 69, or 74, Alcoholic Beverage Code, if the business derives 51 percent or more of its income from the sale or service of alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption, as determined by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission under Section 104.06, Alcoholic Beverage Code;

No problem. Those 5 chapters refer to 3 types of alcohol retailers, private clubs, and brewpubs. These businesses are always easy to identify - they have 18 inch high (or larger) signs that have a big red 51%. Chapter 46 of the Texas Penal Code, which defines location restrictedknives and their restrictions, specifies those only 5 chapters in the ABCode, never referencing manufacturers, distillers, brewers, vinters or wholesalers of alchoholic beverages.

The AB Code in Texas is 477 pages with 251 chapters of legalese to wade through.
