You know what I mean - you pick up the knife for the first time, say "yep", and put it in your pocket without a second thought... Where it will stay for the forseeable future, and hanging out with a few others while you take the others out for an occasional spin.

Here are mine:

- Kershaw-Emerson 4KXL: I picked this up on a whim, mostly because I like bigger knives, wave openers, and framelocks. I was blown away by the knife when I actually picked it up - smooth as butter, solid as a rock, sharp as all hell, and with a gorgeous two-tone finish on the blade. It's the only manual knife I carry anymore, and I like it loads more than any Emerson I've picked up to date. It's such a natural movement to wave it out of my pocket, use it, and fold it without even looking. I haven't had a knife feel so right since the Cold Steel Tuff Lite (which I'll probably be getting another of soon, since my new job isn't so keen on my fixation on bigger knives.)

- Protech Maple Burl Godather: This is the dead sexiest knife I've ever held, and it's everything I could ever want it to be. Every person I've shown it to has said these two things in this order: "This knife is awesome" and then "Where did you get this?". Probably the only knife that everyone has agreed was friggin' amazing, and I agree. A keeper for sure, and too fun to sell or keep sitting around just to look pretty.

- Protech TR 4.1: If it came down to it, this would be the knife I would keep if I had to pare down to just one knife. It's big, it's versatile, it's cozy, and it's solid. The stonewash is so heavy that I'm pretty sure I could drag it across concrete without it really changing the appearance, which means I never hesitate to use it. Also, it fires like a damn .45.

These three hang out on my bathroom counter next to my wallet. Here they are, not on my bathroom counter, but on my cheap-ass faux-marble table I bought on Amazon:

What knives have been instant permanent additions for you? Feel free to post pictures / stories.

Victorinox Alox Cadet. Been in my pocket nearly every day since I got it a couple of years ago.

1. Kershaw Carbon Fiber Blur. There is nothing I don't like about this knife.

2. Boker AK-74 Auto in S30V. Fits my hand better than any other knife I own.

3. Case 6292 Texas Jack. Big and sturdy, and the CV blades take a razor edge.

Kizer Ki423. Despite my disdain for metal handles, this knife fits perfectly in my hand, flips smoother than any flipper I've owned. With CPM-S35VN, its awesome until the cold weather hits.
Southern Grind Spider Monkey--Fit my hand great (not as well as the Kizer, but very close), CF handles keep my hands warmer than a Ti or aluminum framelock in the winter, flicks out great, again CPM-S35VN. My favorite knife.
Spyderco Gayle Bradley--Very good ergo's, CPM-M4 steel is great, though hard to re-sharpen if you let it get too dull, my only hard use folder I haven't sold, and don't plan on selling.
Spyderco Dragonfly 2--ZDP-189 is amazing--great edge retention yet not too difficult to sharpen if you touch it up often enough. Great ergos for a little knife.

Victorinox SAK Executive. IMO, an ideal smaller-sized SAK that's still large enough to be substantial, and I really love the tool selection for this penknife.

CRK small Sebenza 21 Insingo, basic model. I really love the modified wharncliffe-style blade, and find that its shape facilitates the types of cutting I do better than the standard Sebenza blade shape. Easy to carry, strong, and simple yet effective design.

For me it's the BM 940...loved it the second I held one for the 1st time. My 2nd one would be the Ontario RAT2...a blade that I use everyday in some way.

Al Mar sere- have had one in one style or another in my edc rotation since the late.80's.
Lone Wolf lobo cocobolo d/a- best d/a folder ever had. Carry frequently.
Dpx Gear HEST T3- great solid performer, best wave opener, great serrations.
Spyderco VALLOTIN d/a- beautiful traditional appearance, smooth n solid opener.
Fallkniven volcano-love/lust @ first sight. Spent 8+ hrs searching for one immediately after I first saw it, favorite fixed blade.

CRK large micarta Insingo for me. I dont see anything taking its place anytime soon, its perfect in almost every way.

After not having carried a knife for several years, I stopped in at a random gun show as I was driving by and checked out the knives. Saw hundreds and handled dozens but nothing really spoke to me so I left empty handed. Stopped in a Bass Pro Shop later that day and checked out a Mini Barrage and BAM! Had to have that knife. That one definitely clicked for me.

I really like the look of that Godfather, I'm going to have to see if I can find one locally to fondle a bit before I buy. looks like a very fine tip though, I might worry about that with even moderate use. Is it common for people to break the tips on those or do they hold up better than it might appear?

I've been thinking about picking one of those up ever since I parted with my CF-inlaid large insingo. What an incredible blade shape...

Not one particular knife, but rather a pattern: the 4-blade scout/camper.

Got one as a Scout, but lost it a few years later. After a knifeless period, I ended up carrying what is probably my second-favorite knife: a Vic Classic. (Actually the first of a series of Classics; it's a wonderful design but not terrifically robust.)

Then I meandered back to a Scout knife (Imperial, see below) and from that, onward to other makes of campers.

Finally (he says, confidently), I've settled on a Camillus wartime Army Engineer's knife (my father was in the Engineers in WW2: New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon) to handle the scout/camper niche, and a forest-green Vic Classic to cover the Vic Classic niche.

So I'm done. (He says, again confidently.)

550hg griptillian. as close to perfect as I could get. Still miss it, its in storage due to moving to a country that does not like such things. Other blades I like due to changes in taste or conditions, but I could carry that 550 every day without a care.

Benchmade 943, I don't remember exactly how long it has been in my pocket (10+ years) and I haven't seen anything else on the market that looks like it could take its place.

1. Swamprat RMD. The first time I held it, I just started smiling. It is just so perfect. I love literally everything about it.

2. Spyderco PM2. Slices like a lightsaber, crazy ergos, comp lock, all for under $120 (AI the time).

3. Benchmade 940-1. Probably the lightest, most efficient cutter that I currently own. Super well built, and that S90V is crazy stuff.

4. Busse ASHBM. Just a total behemoth of a blade. Feels like a natural extension of my arm, and has the cutting power of an axe. It's just a beast.

5. MLL Knives Custom Falcata. Had mine made specifically for me with 5160, an acid stonewash, and teak wood handles. The way the palm swell sits in my hand just lets me know what kind of force I'm capable of unleashing. The big recurve in the massive 5160 blade just bites like a chainsaw. It's really impressive. Mario really hit it out of the park on that one.

Honorable mention: Spyderco Tuff. If the edge wasn't so thick at the shoulders, it would be a total winner. It's just not a nimble cutter which forces me to carry something else sometimes. If I took the time to thin it out, it would probably be my favorite folder. But, I've gotta find the time.

Cheers.

Benchmade Loco: I just love how this thing feels and cuts. Not light, but rides surprisingly well in pocket. Beast of a knife. And an axis lock.

Benchmade 940: love the aesthetics of this knife so much. It's action with the slim blade is perfect and easy to flick and feels good in hand. I personally have found this to be my favorite slicer unexpectedly.

Kershaw RAM: what the heck is up with places discontinuing their coolest blades! The flipper action is what shines in this one. Also a great all around edc.

Spyderco dragonfly: this little knife found its way into my pocket more often than probably any other knife I have. Partly, cus I can carry it with another bigger knife. This knife turned out to be all I needed for the vast majority of tasks in my day and is great ergonomically. With zdp and nishijin scales it delivers some compact, classy, comfortable cutting power!

Honorable mentions:
Al Mar Eagle
Spyderco Manix
Paramilitary2
Benchmade 530
