What knives do you want for survival?

Well, at least you can never be wrong answering questions with your own made up parameters! Doesn't sound like a lot of fun for a discussion when you are the only one who knows what is being discussed, but whatever floats your boat.

My crew is rocking this:

And we each have a back up :D
....and here is a photo of perfection: the “nobody else better call it San Mai” San Mai SRK! The way the light hits it you would think I pulled Excalibur out of the stone.

Every member of my tribe would be equipped with...

1) A good pliars based multi-tool from Leatherman or Victorinox (sorry SOG and Gerber).

2) A machete of the user's preferred length (12" to 24").

3) An axe of the user's preferrence.

4) An Opinel No.12 Explore.

5) A Victorinox small to medium Swiss Army knife of the user's preferrence.

For my family I'd give them some of my Busse or CRK knives. I wouldn't give neighbors or even some of my friends those knives, they'd be dull and chipped to hell inside of a week

Which is true, but let me tell you, you show up to my deepwoods hidden bunker compound without so much as a knife of ANY kind on you, you'll be turned away at the door. I mean, I'm not going to try to outfit my whole crew.

I would just make sure I only handpicked people who were smart enough to have their steel situation sorted out beforehand in the first place! :D
Personally, I have to disagree. I wouldn’t mind outfitting them with steel in the least, but I'd want them to bring knitting needles or a hoe (not that kind, get your mind out of the gutter ;)). On a cooperative survival situation I'd highly prioritize skills like gardening, sewing and knitting as those people can make food and clothes, which would be incredibly valuable. In fact, I would ideally have a crate of hori hori gardening knives to distribute, as they would help immensely with getting crops in to ensure long term food supplies.

Sage words

Can't be that perfect or you would have chosen it for your whole group ;)
I guess you missed the part where I explained budgeting, and how SK-5 would be the best option for users of all types. I think it’s all still there for you to go back and read if you like.

Oh no, I saw it. The thing is, how you answered is not what the rest of us are discussing. I won't derail this thread further trying to explain this to you. Take care and I hope you and your group enjoy having those SK5 SRKs you chose as your only knives!

Oh we will! Thank you! We will save one for you for when you join us... just sk-5, not San Mai.

The wide variety of knives is out there for practical reasons. What would be the ideal mix of knives for us?
Back on topic....

Take the above quote from the OP's question. I'm wondering why many people didn't list any kitchen knives? I mean a large survival type knife is nice and all, but do you want to do all your kitchen prep with one? I love my HDFK but I'd much rather the North Arm Trilium in the kitchen. Did people just forget or gloss over what was in the OP? Or do they really want to be doing kitchen knife duties with a 10.75" overall length, 6" bladed, .20" thick survival knife?

With all the money in the world I wouldn’t change my answer.
I like it! And the fact that you have dispensed with any and all normal requirements related to type, budget, and quantities makes it that much more realistic. No need to limit yourself to a $40 knife that you and your party will depend on for survival. Busse, CRKs, and antique sandbar bowies for everyone! :D

I stick by my answer.
There's not much you can't do in the kitchen with a machete, an Opinel No.12 Explore, and a Vic SAK.
Heck, the right SAK can even give you a corkscrew, a bottle opener, and a can opener.
