What Knives Exceeded Your Expectations?

for me has to be my Spyderco Native at $39.95+tx, and being only my second spyderco blade,1st being CentofateIII which I did not like....I went to the locally Wally world and held a spyderco native PE and purchased it ....I may need 2 more...+ they make excellent gifts .

Mostly fixed blades.

Mission MPT. Not as hard as steel, but incredibly tough, great feel in the hand, light, and I have put it through heck - and it is still intact. Oh, and it will never rust, ever.

Busse Satin Jack Tac. It's the right size (that I like), tough, and I really like the steel. Its not hard to sharpen, like a couple of other steel types.

Gerber BMF. This was a great knife (I don't have it anymore). Heavy enough to chop with, really comfortable handle, a good sheath came with it, and it was also easy to sharpen and didn't give me problems.

I don't have one of these, but know a folder I would like to get: the Griptilian in D2. Those are great folders.

I had an old Colonial bowie that I was screwing around with in the basement. I was throwing it at a half inch thick piece of particle board propped up against a steel filing cabinet. After a while, I started digging a hole in the wood where I had the most hits. After one throw I went to check on it and the blade had gone entirely through the particle board and a good half inch through one of drawers in the filing cabinet. No damage to the blade. I thought that was somewhat impressive for a relatively low end knife.

1. Spyderco Persians C83/C103
I didn't like look of C83 on the stock photo, but bought it anyway because people on the Spyderco forum talked highly about it. I open the box, hold it im my hand and fall in love. I carry it every day for a year and half. Almost the same story repeated with mini Persian.

2. Spyderco R2
I didn't like it when I received it. The tip turned me off, but after a week of using it I realized what a wonderful user it is.

My Spyderco CPM S30V Military, and the Native which got me into Spyderco. The Benchmade Griptilian 551 is an amazing mid-size knife with a lot of "umph" in it. Probably the best knife and lock for the money.

I can't believe that this turned into another Spyderco thread.I wasn't looking for diehard fans just people that were surprised how good an offbeat knife was. Thanks for your input.

All Moras, all Vitorinox SAKs, and the Benchmade drop point rant bowie. The BM can be had for less than a Ka-Bar, it is a very solid feeling knife with a nice sheath, nice materials, and a great design. If it were full flat ground, it would be one of my favorite "cheap" knives.

I also second the Griptilian series, it is usually the first knife I recommend to a person new to quality knives.

I have never bought a Buck, Spyderco, or Benchmade, that hasn't given me more than I expected.

The MOD caracara is a knife I recently got that has exceeded my expectations. I first held one at a local store and didn't care for how the handle felt at all. I ended up with one from a trade not long ago, and it's really begun to grow on me. It opens very, very smooth and locks up with the best of em. Actually, it reminds me of a sebenza in both those areas, and has a thicker lock and blade. The handle does take some getting used to, but I like it and feel it's secure. These are pretty expensive, but you get a thick ti frame lock, s30v steel, dlc coating, tip up or down carry, multiple grip options, and a choice of carbon fiber or g-10 inserts. It's the nicest hawkbill I've ever had, and while it's designed to be a weapon the blade shape has been great for general cutting tasks. For me, it's been one of those knives you can't seem to put down or stop playing with, and I haven't had one of those in a while. I highly recommend trying one if you're interested in a nice hawkbill, or even for karambit lovers.

Just about every Vic SAK I've purchased, Fallkniven F1, Bark River Gameskeeper, and Spyderco Native (bought a couple at 'Wally World' for just under 40 bucks.) - - -

The SOG Daggert 2. It looks much better than the product shots

Byrd, Crossbill

I picked it up for around $20 and that thing has turned out to be a heck of a knife.

just about every cold steel product I have ever purchased. I have more expensive knives. I expect a $700 Busse Combat to be top notch. They are, but when some one asks for a inexpensive folder that is good value for the money.
Cold Steel Recon 1, also Voyager series. Any of their Hawks are great values. Special forces shovel. the list goes on (GI tanto....cheap, cheap, cheap, tough tough tough!). Scrap yard knives are also amazing value for the price (if you can find them).

That is surprising. I thought nobody liked Cold Steel. My first "tactical" knife was the Recon 1 half serrated 27LSH spear point. I just got it out and it is one awesome cutting machine. I've never actually cut anything with it, but it"s a handfull. It's also shaving sharp. It's a little too big to carry, but it's still fun to play with.

Too many to name them all...I'll pick one recent acquisition...

The Benchmade Hinderer NRA Outdoors fixed-blade (BM12550) with 4.1" blade, a nice hunter/skinner with good design, comfortable ergos, and a decent edge. Contoured Black Wood handle scales and a functional black leather sheath. Blade is bead-blast finished...knife is USA-made.

I liked the looks of it online before I bought it but like it even more in-hand. I found it for less than $45 in 154CM, although it's often listed as 440C, and usually closer to $65. Probably no longer made, but still findable.

Everything's NRA-logoed, so that might be an issue for some...

The SOG Trident. I was a little skeptical until I finally got it and WOW! I always like to find a weak point on knives or somewhere where they could of improved or tweaked something, but I don't know if I can criticize anything about it! I love it and share your thoughts about it.

It's very far from my favorite, but it would be the Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V that I got super cheap on a sale. Really sturdy and a pretty damn good performer for the bucks.
