What Makes 2 Dot 110's Special?

Here's a 2 DOT Buck 110 from back in the D.A.Y. that has successfully traveled thru time to be here with you tonight (your knives can do this to if you take care of them). I put a mirror edge on the blade via the EdgePro Apex and various grades of polishing tape. Hard to see in this light. (my neglected & cheap USB microscope is DOA, unfortunately, so I can't put up any pics that beg the question, "Is that a skating rink, rainbow, or ..." Yes that 440C really can be polished to a mirror finish.

Note: There is a tiny bit of carnuba wax in the verbage etching, left over from cleaning/maintenance, that highlights this info. and makes it appear white to the camera.

Great pics of a great knife, Oregon! Thanks for sharing.

Edges, I'm glad you held on to it as well . What my 2 dot means to me is : For high school graduation my mother gave me a knife (a large folder) only not a Buck . Which didn't last . I graduated during the time of the 2 dots and had she known some about knives that was the knife she would have given me as I wanted one badly . So, now I have a handsome 2 dot in good shape and I'm counting this knife as the correction for my graduation present . The adventures inbetween I can't redo but I'm going to start trying with this one in hand . DM

Oregon, Attractive shots . Yours has some blonde streaks in the ebony as well . I like that edge too !
Keep these stories coming guys, I like it ! DM

Great story, David! Me thinks we have much in common. I fell in love with the 110 in grade 10 I think it was. My first sight, I believe was in either a hunting magazine or Argosy, I can't recall which. The early 110's take me back to a time where things were made with pride by people who cared. I feel blessed that I have that perspective and the 110 was and is a part of it.

I like the macassar scales, and the very first Buck that I ever bought was a 2-dot 110 in 1976

That was back at a time when I couldn't afford to buy a real Buck. I had a couple of cheap clones that I have no idea what happened to.
They aren't made like them anymore so when I had the chance, I bought four brand new old stock. Boxes, paperwork and all just as they came from the factory. Into the safe they go.

Remember me in your will, Dave! :D

That is, unless I go to the great Buck factory in the sky first.

My fav 110 model is the 2 dot,it has what i call the best steel ever used from Buck,440c is my fav of an ything out there. It sharpens up nice, stays sharp, and will hold a edge well.I also like the solid wood massacar sllabs, the thick non radiused bolsters, the feel odf the knife in general.Try this:take a new 110 and a old 2 dot and open and close them a few times, then tell me which knife feels better/smoother action/more solid lock up.

I have 12 old 2 dots, not one has any type of blade play, all are smooth as silk to open close, even the brass stays polished much longer than one of todays models.

Not just the blade steel . The wood slabs are of solid Macassar ebony and the frame was the most beefy used for that model . Giving it good heft . Its leather sheath is a plus as well . DM

That's something else that I like about that era, the solid wood scales. They show more variations in coloration than the newer processed woods do.

Dave, or anyone - was the frame of the two-dot version more beefy than prior versions?

I love the 3 dot and prior 110's best of all Buck products. Love this 2 dot so much....

that I had to pick up a user for kickin around purposes

David is right-its as beefy as the 110 gets:thumbup:

Thats why 300bucks used it for a doorstop:p

You guys have some nice two dots... I have some in box some where... They are some of Bucks, Best Bucks.... For sure.... ITE ...

Jack, Thanks for the photos . Razor, "the brass stays polished longer" . I agree with your statements . They're also harder to polish on the first try . Newell, I posted the weight difference in another thread with my two dot 'before and after ' photos (.442lb for 91 and .477lb for 2 dot) . My 2 dot measures 20/32" at each end . Whereas, my 91, 110 is 2/32 more narrow . The same holds true at mid-handle width (2/32 difference) . Plumber, I really like the ebony on your bottom two . Your lucky to have those . ITE, a striking 'Highway Patrol' model 2 dot . Aurum did some nice work on those . APF, Me thinks so too . ;) DM

I was just looking at my 2 dot collection and noticed they are not all 2 dots, lol some have 3 dots and one has 4 dots, some of the 2 dots only have 2 brass scale pins, one in front and one in the rear.I guess now its gonna be called my non-radiused 110 collection.

Razor, Thanks for mentioning that as the two small pins were the first 2 dots . Then right behind them were the 4 small pins (Lambert's). Both occured quickly in 1974 and perhaps into early 75 . Then by like mid 75 came the most common version that we now see, the 3 large pins, still not radiused and not fully hollow ground . Its this version/model that continued on until the 3 dot models . What an interesting knife . DM

Call me John :) I was wondering about the comparison to earlier 110s, pre-two dots. I would guess that the two dots are no more beefy than the earlier 110s?

I just weighed these three 110's on my digital scale and I was surprised at what I found. The top one weighs 6.92 oz., center one 7.38 and the bottom 2 dot weighs in at 7.68.

There's a noticable difference in the feel of the top two, but not so much between the bottom two.
