What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Sweet knives Barrett, glad I was lucky enough to see them and handle them myself. I didn’t tell you this at the show but you looked like a kid on Christmas morning when you walked up with those two Barlows! 🤣
Well done buddy! 👍

That sounds about right, Todd! 🤣 I was definitely excited to find a few older knives this year.

2 GREAT finds Barrett : Chero-Cola had to stop using that name in the early 1920's due to a Patent Infringement suit by Coca-Cola . So your old Barlow is probably that old .

Thanks, Harry. I read up a little on Chero-Cola and came up with a similar date range. I just don’t know if that can be used to accurately date the knife, or if someone just chose to put an old name on a knife made decades after the company had changed names. I honestly just don’t know.

A couple of Dandies, Barrett!! I, too, love that KeenKutter!! Remarkable knife; looks quite "full"!!

Thanks, Charlie. Yep, nice full blade on the Keen Kutter, and overall just some nice character to it.

I guess someone could have put an old name on an old knife that had blank tang stamps but probably not on properly heat treated blades . Chero-Cola did make some other advertising things like Bottle Openers and a Ladies Leg Knife that had Celluloid handles . I thing you most likely have a very rare sharp edged cutting device that is at least 90 years old there Barrett .

FINALLY!!! What a great hobby/passion knives are. The "chase/hunt" is almost as fun as finally acquiring what you've been after. Sometimes there's that let down afterwards, like "what now"? I waffled at first when this presented itself and I thought it would just live it's life out tucked nicely into a knife roll. I'm trying to get away from that and carry that long sought after knife.

I worked a trade with a terrific member here and and finally here's a TC I thought would be unobtainable, 2012 Spear in Copperhead bone. It came Saturday and I couldn't be any happier ;) :) Thanks balor85 balor85 Nate!!!

Incredible example and the definition of grail! I'm really happy for you Paul, it couldn't have gone to a nicer member here on the porch! Congrats:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
(What a coincidence, Nate balor85 balor85 just helped me out with a grail 85, super great guy!)

Camillus barlows, the Tip Top's run from 4 line period to early short line, somewhere in the early short line time they switched to a Camillus bolster, after this the downsized the barlow and went to a Barlow bolster, most of the Barlow bolster knives will be delrin but early ones are bone.IMG_0493.jpegIMG_0498.jpeg
