What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

A pleasure to carry and use...mine too has been used daily..... FES

Getting some patina I see, Fes!
Just like the rocks it's sittin' on!

Charlie I have avoided this thread until this morning. One reason is I have never been particularly interested in Barlows, and the other, and maybe more important reason, your threads are sometimes exceptionally hard on my checkbook:eek: I read it from cover to cover this morning and must say it was a very gratifying walk through this area of cutlery history. Outstanding collection, you have done the pattern proud! Now, I must go to hide my asset access:D

I've wished Schrade USA made an Old Timer Barlow in that latest brown and tan sawcut Delrin, plus I really like the Barlow with a spear blade, so this one was a very welcome item. It's not a Schrade, but these TC's really have Old Timer appeal.

This has been in the family for quite a while. Curious as to maker/date/etc... I'm guessing it's NYK Co. but haven't found any stamps like this. Any info would be welcome.

New Guy Thom.

Yes, New York Knife Co, just like the one in my avatar!

For a closer look at a stamp like yours, look at the first image in the first post of this thread, and here and there afterwards. :)

Beautiful knife you have there.

Wow! You folks are very kind. I found this forum after looking for pics of knives on google. Saw Waynorth's post and thought I was DNO for a match. The Tang stamp still has me curious. I can't find anything with just "NEW YORK". After Gram passed last yr I found more of different types. Old Timers, an old scout knife (martin on tang)? Fish Knife (colonial?) Some tool knife that say KLEIN TOOLS, but my favorite is this little Mother Of Pearl number. It's beautiful to look at and has great feel. It's crazy sharp holds its edge very well. I haven't even tried to sharpen it.

Thanks for the input from all. My first knife new was Schrade Uncle Henry (LB5 with rosewood?). Got it in 1982 from Father's work buds. Still rocking it!

Thanks again. You Folks ROCK!

Meanwhile, this happened in NY:
-- and in Sunset Bone, no less!

Sneaky, they are (Canal Street).

I'd miss patina-ble blades and stamped bolster(s), but that looks mighty fine indeed.

They're calling it a "British Barlow."

Which raises the immediate question,

"Wot makes it Bri' ish, Luv?"

And available in either 14-4CrMo or 440C.
"The force is strong with this one."

Uh-oh. I'm gonna be in trouble.

Looks very interesting indeed!
I too would prefer patina-ble blades (nice term coined there, ~P) but would like to see one of these none the less; if only to hear its Cockney accent!:D
Can someone email me about where they are? Eric?

Still in production Charlie, I think we're looking at about three weeks or so. I'll let you know as soon as they come out. Not sure about that 440C part, as far as I know they'll be 14-4CrMo only, which has extremely good stainless properties itself, especially for a tool steel.

I do gotta say I like the proportions from what I can see on that new Canal Street. :)

Why would a Barlow have a Cockney accent?

Clearly it would sound like Sean Bean! :D

Welcome to Bladeforums Traditional New Guy Thom. Looks like your gramps had great taste. How about starting a new thread about his knives so we can see some more pics and discuss them. I have a similiar Wostenholm penknife, but don't want to clutter up Charlie's thread.

LOL! :D
