What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

IMG_0068.JPG a gift from my cousin a year or so ago. He usually has a stable of 2 or 3 beagles and 1 or 2 squirrel dogs (fluctuates). Love to listen to the dogs run a rabbit.

I keep digging this knife out and fondling it. Pen has an exceptionally strong pull and delrin scales aren't exactly flush but the blades take a keen edge. (Argentina)

Side note: I was carrying a 15 harness jack with the chestnut covers and offered him that knife for a "trade" for the boker... I'm glad he didn't accept haha

795 pages, have we figured out what makes a good Barlow yet?

The Barlow is one of my favourite traditional knife shapes, probably second only to Swaybacks. I like the single blade Barlows especially as I like thinner knives.

T.Willy, really nice addition to your Barlow collection, it's hard to beat a vintage Case red bone when it comes to Barlows.

The pen blade and nail nick position has changed over the years on Case Barlows, the early ones like yours have the pen in front and nicks on the same side, later have the pen in back with the nick on opposite side, they have also moved the position of the nail nick on the main blade over the years.

Some photos that show some of the differences.

Thanks for the kind words everyone and thank you Augie for the info and picks of the other versions of this barlow. I actually would much prefer the pen blade in the back with the nick on the other side. I bite my nails so there quite short witch doesn't help with a nice solid blades snapping barlow like this one lol. :DI always buy my knives to use so I think I'm going to pass this one along to someone who doesn't bite there nails and can use it alot easier then I can.

Nice examples John, and t.willy. Redbone Case Barlows are true icons of the Barlow breed!

Thanks Charlie. The seller had mine advertised as having Chestnut color covers but I think you and a few others on here are right. It looks more Red then anything.:cool:
